Super Wal-marts

any of you done the site utilities for super wal-marts? we've bid about a half a dozen, did 2...the spec that calls for granular backfill material in all utility trenches under paved surfaces bothers me. the first one we did was on a real wet, expansive soil site. now, every winter, the parking lot heaves, the utility trenches stay put, appearing that the ditches have settled, until spring when the frost goes out, and things are back to normal. any of you had this experience?

Re: Super Wal-marts

day,

We have never done that work but I've seen it in a lot of places. Makes good work look bad. Nobody but the people doing the work would know.

Never done wal-mart jobs, but have had townships require stone backfill all the way to the top for sanitary trenches in developments that we did. Never had problems with frost heave on the roadways.

Re: Super Wal-marts

saw something similar on a big job we did some tears ago. the gc called in january citing that all the manholes in paved areas had settled. I'd never seen it before but as you noted, frost heave was causing all the manhole rims to 'sink' about 3/4 of an inch. by march they had all 'raised' themselves back to grade.
