For any of you guys experienxe in site preperation, what is the easiest, cheapest, and most durable laser to use. Also would you buy a single slope or dual slope laser just starting out?

What size sites are we talking, and what do you intend to do with the laser?

I have a spectra physics that's almost 20 years old that has worked well until recently, but I blame that on my "sorry, it fell out of my hand" workers.

Now known as spectra precision, they still make good instruments. I also recently purchased a David White that is capable of dual grade and seems like a decent unit.

From my experience anything you can buy for less than about $1,200 to $1,500 is a waste of money and won't hold up. But from there sky's the limit on what you can spend on grade checking.

Both the Deere and Cat are good machines. If it's used equipment you're looking at shop on the condition of the machine, price and local dealer support.
