Re: Shop Art

that wasn't a septic line. in my community, our water supply well field is 6 miles or so out of town. that particular 16" water main is over 30 years old and had a lot of sediment that settled in the bottom, greatly decreasing the volume of water that was able to be pumped into town. we cut in 2 wyes into the line to feed a "pig" into it, and to push the sediment out of the main, and have it and the sediment it pushed with it out of the other wye on the other end. for about 5 mins. it looked like a huge turd coming out of the wye, then ran black, then brown, finally cleared up after about 5-6 hrs. here's the link to the pic showing the result.

That was prolly hard core pr0n in those days.

Hey Day, was that a wet hole you dug for the pig wye, cuz I see that you have 2 sumps set-up, or is that just to pump out of after the flushing ?

we backfilled the hole after we got the wye/riser put in before flushing, but the watertable was about 1' below the invert of the pipe, and we overdug about 2' below the pipe....put back in the rock as you can see...that way when we cut the main, all the water left in the main would flow into the rock, the sump to the pump, and outta the hole. plus, the rock gave us a nice solid, clean footing to stand on to work

Day,
I can still remember the 5 digit phone #'s and the party lines. Shoot Nick is old enough to remember Uncle Alexander, well maybe almost.

That is the way to do it. We always try to work like gentleman. No sense slopping around in water and mud if you don't have to. When doing work for the city like that, do you submit a bid or is it by the hour ?

Re: Shop Art

south dakota law says that govt. entities can "negotiate" contracts with contractors as long as the negotiated part aggregate does not exceed $20k unless determined to be an emergency. this particular job, we supplied labor only. city provided all the job material. this particular job was time/material, but we were awarded the install of all city water mains this year, that was all unit priced and they advertised for bids.
