Sand VS Stone

While on the drain topic when thinking about under ground drains like a footing drain wouldn't it be better and easier to use a clean sand and pipe combination and forget about fabric and stone?

How Joe?

Where would the silt go?

What happens when silt washes down on stone?

What happens when silt runs down on sand?

Silt shouldn't be running on an underground drain to any degree anyway after backfill.

Talk to me!

Sandy silt into little round holes in perf. pipe
clog stone
gets sand silty silly
when ground water flows it seems to me it would take sand particles with it into pipe making it all nasty and clogged after yrs.

Re: Sand VS Stone

Joe,

Your right about the holes. I have been concentrating on the infiltration of silt into the stone and drains I have found with fabric that is sealed by silted clay material.

We now cover fabric with sand wherever I have doubts about the soil conditions.

Ok and what happens to the sand when it gets all contaminated with silt?
And do you keep both feet firmly planted on the floor when you brush your teeth?

Re: Sand VS Stone

Joe,

In an underground drain where does the silt come from?

Re: Sand VS Stone

Underground water moving through soil only moves particles of soil when there is a void to move it through. If there are no voids there should be no silt.

There shouldn't be voids in properly placed backfill.

Nick

Is there anyone else out there?

Re: Sand VS Stone

I could be wrong, but seems to me that water traveling through certain ground conditions could start bringing in particles of soil into the pipe system., creating voids and causing more problems. Am I crazy?

Re: Sand VS Stone

Water will move faster through stone than sand. Also, the sand will fill in through the holes of the pipe.

In situations where high volumes of water aren't being handled, why even use pipe - except as an outlet? Why not just use stone and fabric?

The benefit of fabric around an underdrain will depend on the soil conditions. If the soil is well draining to begin with the use of fabric doesn't add much. In poorly draining soils, fabric prevents soil particles from migrating into the voids in the stone and choking the drain.
