Renting Equipment

I got this friend who found out i bought a new dozer. He is an equip operator and has a backhoe truck and trail. He has a lot of dozer work and asked me to rent it to him. I dont really use the thing anyway, so what would be a good price to rent it to him? I was thinking by the hour. maybe 25$/hr.Of course I would have a contract that would spell out damage, etc... just like a rental co. He would probably use it all the time. What do you think? thanks. chris

Re: Renting Equipment

Don't forget the routine maintenance (fluid changes, gear lube, daily greasings, etc.) in your contract. Seeing as how it is fairly new, you wanna protect your investment. Is he a good friend, one you can trust to take care of it like it was his? If you really don't use it, and you expect him to use it fairly frequently, hourly might work out OK. If he is only going to use it a few hours a week heare and there, he would be getting the better end of the deal- having an expensive piece of equipment at his disposal without having to pay big money for it as you did.

In that case, a weekly or monthly rate might be more fair to you. After all, someone' going to have to pay for the wear and tear on it. If your not profiting from the use, it shouldn't be you. Call around and see what dealers rent them for and go from there.

Re: Renting Equipment

Well, in my area, at D3 is worth $75 hr. So minus operator, fuel and grease, you are looking at around $30 hr.
