Range??

I'm curious to know how far you guys travel for work? Perhaps we're spoiled because of the development here--but we can't justify travelling more than 50 miles for a job. As a matter of fact, it's been years since we had a commute longer than 30 minutes.

I've heard some of my competition claiming they're going 150 miles or more for work and I thought it seemed unlikely.

We will travel on average 150 miles from Minneapolis which pretty much covers everything populated. Once you get out in the sticks people get sticker shock when you send them bids. We have one top secret traveling account which takes us into Wisconsin, south Dakota, Iowa and rural Minnesota but that account is worth the hassle.

Our preferred work area is Vancouver Island but we advertise as serving all of Western Canada and would go anywhere in Canada for the right project.

Wow--I guess we're spoiled and lazy. Do you actually make anything on those long hauls or are you just staying busy? Our farthest job was 80 miles and we only did that because we were paid very well.

There just seems to be too much competition covering the state of NC to make any job with more than an hour of driving justifiable.

Re: Range??

i'm in south dakota, we have done quite a few utility installs on ethanol plants. farthest one was 113 miles away from home. if they pay well enough, buy more stuff, hire more people....have at it, that's what we did.

Re: Range??

We are small, only one machine and no crew to keep busy. Our machine is easy to transport and we like to travel so for us it is no big deal. But we don't go if there is no profit to be made. No sense wearing out the machine for nothing.

95% of our work is within 20 min of our shop. The farthest that we have gone is about 1 hr 15min away.

Re: Range??

I'd say I do most my work in about a 30 mile radius.

Depending on traffic that translates to any where from a fifteen minute drive, (my current closest, 3 miles rural road) to about 1-1/2 hour to 2 hour drive, if there is any traffic.

Traffic here can be so bad, there have been days that I have turned around and gone back to the yard so I could be somewhat productive.

We had a little ice/snow storm a couple weeks ago, some folks were stuck on the beltway for over 4 hours NOT MOVING.
