Pricing

Hello,
I was charged additional fees for concrete work. These fees seem to be exorbitant but I may be wrong. Could anyone help out?

To Drill an 8" hole through an 8" concrete wall; Jackhammer a 1' square hole through 4" floor slab; and reseal holes (exterior with a water plug and floor with patch): $1300.00

Water plug a 45° slope where wall and footing meet for approx. 60' : $700.00

Instal inside footing drain prior to slab being poured for approx. 50' : $500.00

Altogether these add-ons totaled $2500.00 in addition to the original contract. Can anyone give me an idea if these additional charges are reasonable or exaggerated?

Prices vary by region, so my opinion may not mean much but...

it depends upon conditions for instance:

10 bucks/foot, Wow that's a lot....unless someone has to send guys out just to do that 50' and they have to make a special trip.

Do you have a clue what a tool that can drill an 8" hole through an 8" wall costs? Me either but it must be a lot!

The water plug fix, I don't know too much about but all in all I would say you were not treated too badly on this.

You got the benefit of someone else investing tens of thousands of dollars in equipment that you got the benefit of for mere pennies in relation to the cost of that equipment.

Try doing all that yourself next time, and then tell us what you think it is worth.

Not trying to be a hard ass here but really....how do you expect a guy to make a living?

Sounds to me like unless the customer is your mother...this should be a good thing. If these are true extras outside of the normal scope of work, you get the price from the sub, mark it up and make money on it. Am I missing something?....did you forget this part of the job in your estimate, then include it in your proposal and have to eat it?

The problem is I had other options that would not involve drilling but they made that decision for me!

Actually it is my mother-in-law and the sub never gave me any work orders or estimates. There are also other charges on the bill which they didn't even do—so I am just trying to make sure the things they did do are in line. My architect thinks they are way over priced!

Homeowner acting as general contractor. That is why when I got these additional charges which where not discussed with me prior to being billed, I was surprised and have no benchmark for comparison. I want another pros opionion if possible.

Re: Pricing

the 15-20% profit you denied a general by acting as your own...is now biting you in the ass. now you come to a contractor's forum asking us to discredit the contractor's prices without knowing the exact particulars? as far as i'm concerned......#1....you're on you're on your own....#2....pay the contractor what he's invoiced you for.

Acutally, a general would have just maked this up another 20% so I am still ahead of the game. If you read the question I first posted all the way through you would see I admitted to not having experience with this type of pricing and I was not trying to discredit anyone, just get clarity. I would have never even posted this if there where not other fraudulant items on the invoice that made me question the whole bill. Thanks for your help anyway!

You're welcome! But your initial post had nothing to do with fraudulent charges.

If you are being charged for work that was not done...that is a whole nother situation. But to throw that in at the last minute without any more information....what do you expect??

If you would like to change this to a post about fraudulent charges, bring it on. So far I don't have any evidence that what you say was done was overly priced.

Typically architects don't know dick about what things cost in the real world, so I would not put too much stock in what they may tell you price whys.

Do you have any idea how much time the contractor that is "ripping you off" has spent on site and with how many workers to get these things done for you?

That could be starting point as to whether you are being taken advantage of or not. How about some more on the fraud stuff for us...this could get interesting.

Plus the amount of time making plans when not at the site; getting the materials, etc., etc.

A lot of people do not take that into account that once the contractor leaves the site, he is still working.
