Plugging Sewer Pipe That Is To Be Retired
I am doing some excavating on a job where I exposed two old 4 inch sewer pipes entering the house through the foundation wall.
I normally leave it for the plumber to cap but he takes this week for vacation. The plumber is doing new mains so we cut this back to right where it enters the foudation. I have a 4 inch test plug in there now but what is the best way to retire this pipe good? The plug is doing an okay job but because the pipe isnt in the greatest shape during the last rain the backed up sewer water pushed past and flooded the site. do I just cap this with a rubber cap or do I fill the end of the pipe with something? Re: Plugging Sewer Pipe That Is To Be Retired
Local codes would typically dictate what is required in an abandonment of this type.
I would think the piping should be cut and capped closer to the main line. But I am not an expert on this. ![]() As a temporary measure, I would dig back along the pipe, make a clean cut on a section that is sound and install a cap to avoid the backups you have had. |

Later in the summer we plan to break the sidewalk to install the new sewer, we will recap it then closer to the main. Fernco fittings it is for now..

Re: Plugging Sewer Pipe That Is To Be Retired
I have done alot of pluggin old sewer services here i my area due to a major storm/sewer seperation project and generaly we jus mix up an old bag of concrete and shove it in, now sayin that it also was usually close to the main, not at foundation. But i would think that it could be done also at foundation. Never have i been back to one that leaked. but be sure to inspect the remaining section if you can for cracks, leaks. Good luck. I really enjoy all of the knowledge shared in this chat, being an operator/pipe layer/know it all
i learn something everytime i come in. I hope that i can pass on a lil for you also
