Ornery Ole Fart

self admittedly...i am!!! you know, i wish i had the fire in my belly yet that i see in some of the posts of the young people that are showing up here. i admire them, and hope that they continue to find this forum a place to share and learn. and then i see some of their questions on pricing....and i really cringe. ask me a tech question. if i have the expertise or experience with that scenario .....geesus, i'll help you all i can. ask me a pricing question? dude, or dudette.........you're on your own. if you're going to be in business for yourself, you really need to sit down, and find out what it costs you to operate. there's no way that any of us connected electronically via the internet can price jobs for you. there are WAAAAAAY too many variables in the underground biz to contend with. i'm 53 yrs old, and firmly convinced that our trade is the most demanding physically, and mentally. if for nothing else, the safety aspects. none of us want to go home at nite thinking we in anyway shape, or form put any of our employees in harms way. it would be awfully hard to explain to some little boy or girl that their daddy wasn't coming home tonight because of our actions. want to go 100 stories in the air? fine....by the time the general gets there, we've got the jobsite stabilized. have a job that's crap dirt, wet? we've found a way to remediate the problems, and make it work. locally, i have some very good competition. i would like to consider we are artists in our trade. the only difference....is my canvas is an excavation, that after being backfilled....will never be seen again

Re: Ornery Ole Fart

Nick, sorry I missed last night again, we were at a jobsite until well after 10pm. You know it's chaos when it even pulls me out of the office. Eventually maybe things will slow down enough I can pop in.

Re: Ornery Ole Fart

i want to expand on the young and old thing if i can...back in my 20's...you've all heard this...my dad was the dumbest SOB that walked. after ww2, he started digging in 47. he was a welder in the shipyards in bremerton, wash during the war. he could fab anything, weld anything, even weld your butt shut if needed be. he knew so much, and it's truly sad that it took his passing for me to realize just what he knew. my son has been with me forever, and been a lot better listener than i was. he's more patient with customers than i am, he's better in the office than i ever thought of being, he presents himself better than i do, he's more adept in yakking with white shirts and ties "bankers, lawyers, accountants" than i am i would have no fear that if something were to happen to me tomorrow....that he wouldn't be able to carry on....he's 28. i pray that my input to this forum....is to help young people like my son.
