Oklahoma

Well we're on our fourth day in Oklahoma. It's a nice place. joasis is a good guy. His wife is really nice. I'll post more when I get back. The dirt business is different here from what I have seen.

LMAO

Glad to hear you are having a good trip, Nick.

You'll have to fill us in on what is different about the dirt business out there when you get back.

Re: Oklahoma

rino,

The iron was sitting last week anyway. We were waiting for what is hoped to be the once and for always final change order to be signed and get a deposit.

The guys tore apart a 61' Rogers lowbed and sand blasted it. We put the first coat of paint on it today.

So, Oklahoma! So different but so the same. Earthmoving wise it seems, with the bigger spaces many more dozers and motor graders. I saw bottom dumps working for the first time. They were dumping a heavy clay and didn't seem to slow down too much to dump. I did see 2 tracked loaders, a 977L Cat on a demo job and joasis's International. Which is alright for it's age. On the roads I saw more tandem axle dumps than anything else. Some trailer dumps and 1, 5 axle dump with what looked like 2 steerable lift axles? The excavators I saw were on the large size 300 size and up, mostly on highway projects. A majority of what I saw was newer looking. John Deere and Caterpillar seem to rule. This is just what I saw over an area about 80 miles long?

I probably couldn't get a job there! There wasn't one cliff side to work on that I saw!

Re: Oklahoma

There must be a sickness that we all have in common.

I'll bet we all do what Nick did. Go away somewhere and look at the exact thing we do day in and day out.

I know I do. I go to the Keys every winter and while I'm there, or at an industry conference accross the country, or in Aruba, I'm always looking at the pavement thats being installed. Admiring the color or make up of the aggregate. Looking at work techniques. Watching for the simalarities in a crews interaction on a work site in Southern California and seeing the exact same things in my crews. When I was on vacation in Aruba 10 years ago I actually went as far as picking up a shovel for a while when I was watching a back road being paved just so I could see how the mix was. They probably thought I was nuts.

I hope i can get cured some day when I retire. A sickness like that can kill

Re: Oklahoma

Page,

Welcome to the site. Glad to have you around. Please join in the conversation.

Things are very much the same in Oklahoma, Page as here in CT. The differences were a point of interest and thought.

Oklahoma is Okay!
