New Year?

My best wishes to you all on this New Years day, for a joyous, healthy and abundant 2009.

But! what are your thoughts on 2008?

how about 2009?

Business thoughts, life in general? The huge spike in fuel prices seem to have passed like a tsunami. In their wake there's not much left standing. Don't be bashful.

07 was a big year for us....08 was a touch better than average. no real complaints...09 "potential for work".....looks to be colder than a mother in law's kiss

Re: New Year?

Happy New Year to everyone!

I think '09 will be a good year, maybe not as much work as '08 but who knows, it could be more.

I have some good projects coming, (well, I am bidding some good projects), Good Lord willing, I will land a few of these.

Positive attitude can go a long way, I'll do alright this year.

2008 was a good year for me. learned a lot and stayed busy for the most part. for a first year in bussiness full time i am optimistic for the future. things are very slow now but i am hoping it is a combination of winter, election year, and a little being the economic problems we are constantly hearing about. hopefully things will pick up in the spring. i am going to work harder toward getting more commercial work to supplement the homeowner stuff i have been doing. i have been gaining references from a few builders that are very encouraging for the future. looking forward to the next step in this adventure.
Happy New Year to all,

Re: New Year?

Nick, Thanks for the well wishes for '09.... Its a great way to start off the year.
'08 was a good year however I had some incredible repair expenses that left me short on winter cash..... Oh well, been picking up a few small winter jobs like sewers and such that help out. Have some work left over from last summer that still needs to be done/finished, some other work that was planned for next spring/summer has been canceled due to economic slow down.....

'08 was a pretty good year for us. '09 doesn't look good for us though. We have talked to a few or our customers and they all have spec houses sitting not selling and very few customers coming through the doors. A couple developments that we were counting on are on hold due to the lack of customers. There are people that want to build, but they all say the same thing and that is, "we have to sell our house first". We are looking at a site work job for a bottled gas/acetylene plant, but we sill see. If we do not get that job, we may have to sell some iron.

Re: New Year?

Well, I for one feel confused (more so than usual). During 08 which for us was a good volume year. I finally found the other operator/driver I had been looking for for 3 years. I considered buying a new machine. The amount of dollar discount on the machine offered and a good trade in offer and 0% financing made everything seem like it was a done deal. The only thing that kept me from it was a nagging feeling. Here it is Jan 4 and we are still working and only the weather is going to stop us. We have 2 more months work. If nothing cancels we have about 25% of the dollar volume we did last year already OK'd.

But that is all work started or agreed to by June last year. There's only been inquiries for 2 small jobs in 3 months. I gave a pink slip 3 weeks ago to the guy I just hired. My guys who have been with me and I can handle the volume of work we have. The trade in value of the machine I was going to trade has fallen about 35% they tell me. It seems from what I can tell that the Ritchie Bros. Auction in VA. has set a precedent and prices of used equipment have dropped dramatically. We are having difficulty getting paid on one project for a large sum. We will get paid but it could take 4-5 months.

Confusing?

I dont see it as confussing at all. I think you spelled out just fine Nick. The economy down turn has moved essentialy like the wave cheer at a Giants game. While it seems to be taking time to get around the stadium, its gonna get to your seat any time now.

Your doing work you sold a year ago, and not selling anything new which is basicly how our year went but it just got slower and slower as the year dragged by.

I'd like to be positive for 09 but my brain tells my heart to get ready for allot of fishing time.
