Mud ????

Is it just me or does nothing dry out once the temperatures go below 50 degrees.

4-5 more months of that.

Is there really room for mud
between all those rocks?

Re: Mud ????

Well, we haven't had any mud because we have been dealing with rock jobs. Now the ground is froze, so we made out good this year.

Re: Mud ????

You are right, it doesn't dry well once the temps go down. We have to deal with the frost in the morning then mud later in the day.

If we have the room or are hauling we will cut the frost off and load it out first thing, then we have pretty dry conditions the rest of the day.

it definitely takes a lot longer to dry when the temp is below 50.

Re: Mud ????

We are working in mud. We dug the footings for a pool house the other day.
the second bucket water started to seep into the hole. In the silt, clay soil everything started to turn to yuck. Ended up having to dig the whole thing out and haul it to the other side of the property. Dig 6" deeper and stone with fabric.

It's the same everywhere we are working. Alot of water in the ground right now.

It's not like it's something new. Some part of the year every year for the last 38 years its been that way. I guess in my old age I feel less and less like dealing with it. That and cold. 7 degrees the other day at 5:30 am 57 degrees this morning at 5:30 am.

Re: Mud ????

We've done larger jobs near rivers and creeks that required de-watering pumps, but I'm sure that is overkill in your situation.

Re: Mud ????

Hi R B, It never is bad to sink a hole and put in a pump. No matter what the size job. Of course it doesn't help when the discharge hose freezes.

RB Welcome to CT Talk. It's a pleasure to have a new person on board. If you are around on thursday nights at 9 EST we have a chat room that is mostly E&SW people but almost anyone shows up.

Re: Mud ????

that's exactly what we do nick. overexcavate everything 6-8", and put a pump in. as we excavate, we keep up with the rock immediately behind the digging operation. this allows the water to flow thru the rock and get to the pump.

Re: Mud ????

Oh Boy!, here we go.

It's been raining for 2 days. Rivers are above flood stage, 40% of the area has no power from ICE. Trees down all over the place. Temperature is headed down.

I can't wait for Monday.

Theres always an upside Nick. Hopefuly this bit of mother nature will trash something that requires hireing an experienced excavating contractor extrordinair, such as yourself.

As for me, I cant wait for my son to graduate college and my house to be paid off. Then its 3 months per year in the Keys and you can keep the crappy cold weather up north where it belongs.
