Mini Graders

I've been kicking around the idea of getting a small grader of some brand to do gravel roads and driveways. There doesn't seem to be any one around that has one. Guys bring in dozers to do the work. I've talked to some road associations that would like to have a person that does the maintenance on a regular basis.

Anyone have any experience with these machines. Our area is hilly, and driveways are narrow.

Re: Mini Graders

Joe,

They do but I'm talking of driveways and private roads 1/4 to 1 mile long. I tried one of those 15 years ago and it seems you need more weight for serious grading.

Re: Mini Graders

Nick,
Lots of the bigger pavers around here use them, I think the're pretty easy to operate and work on, pretty simple machine.

Re: Mini Graders

We are considering purchasing a small grader. Right now for road work, we grade it with the dozer and have the paving contractor come in and dust it off with the grader.

Re: Mini Graders

I am also looking for a small grader, just waiting for a great deal to come along.

Also doing like Rino, using our old D3C LGP with its 10' blade to do the finish grading and having my paving sub do the touch up with his new Lee Boy.

I have been looking for a Lee Boy or Champion. I have found some great deals on large graders, but are something I don't need or want.

Re: Mini Graders

Hello,
Before I went out on my own I was a grader operator for some large paving companies. I mostly ran big graders, but we had some smaller jobs we would rent the smaller ones, psi make a cool smaller grader, had a bucket on front to spot materials , the one we rented was set up for lasers and slope control. We also rented a lee boy, that was basic but worked nice, I graded a bike path with a smaller fait alis that was a little big, had a 10 ft blade. Those old hubbers are cool but old, some have a bell for back up alarm . I have been thinking about buying one myself and have it set up for lasers and grade roads and slabs in large buildings.

Re: Mini Graders

Have you tried one of those 12' box scrapers that you tow. My Dad uses one on his gravel drive. It's like the one pictured and is 12' wide.

X2, local fella here has one and it seems to work well from what i have seen. If memory serves me it is a Cat too. I will pay better attention the next time i see it. It is small enough that he puts it on a low boy trailer along with the skid steer and a roller.

Re: Mini Graders

Gehel makes a nice compact grader as well as leeboy, the gehel has a single rear drive 8' mold board with a 6' loadre attmt. They are really nice for tight work, driveways ect..

Re: Mini Graders

Sorry Nick, I just saw this.

I have a Gehl 747 model grader. Its a dual rear axel machine just like the big units but its ideal for driveay and small subdivisions.

I had a Huber years ago but felt the gehl was a better machine for me.

Unfortunatly the design was given up by Gehl and the company that was actualy making them in Minnisota (TCI) went out of business but its a shelf componenet machine and in today's internet world its stilll possible to get parts. I also thought I saw the exact same design with the name of "allquipt" on it to and it was being offerd at Eastern Equipment for a while, but of course Easterns gone now too.

Theres a few companies like Champion and PSI that make graders for that size your looking for and theres plenty of used ones in magazines like "Pavement market" and because thier a single use type of machine even old ones can give plenty of great service.

Re: Mini Graders

I have ran mini graders and box blades and pull behind blades. They all have places that they work really well in. Where I have seen most contractors screw up is by trying to make it do a lot more then it can. Mini graders are great for fine grading. But don't plan on replacing a dozer or a Cat 140 with one. For maintaining a long gravel road a mini grader would work.

I am new to this site and this is my first reply or post. So I cant put the link in.

I saw this and thought it was pretty neat. Has anyone seen one of these in person or ran one? I was looking for a better way to set grade for pouring 6ft golf cart path. Right now we have been using a small blade, but often get in area's where it's to tight even for a small blade.

If you look on youtube and type in skid steer trimmer you will see what I am talking about.

Champion has some really nice mini graders. Check them out too.
