Lot Clearing
I have a three acer lot that needs cleared, it was logged ten years ago, the old stumps and under brush shouldn't pose much of a problem, but it is covered with small trees about 1 to 5 inches in diameter, and they are thick,,,what is the best way to push, grab, pull, tear, yank,or pray the little buggers out of there,,,

Re: Lot Clearing
Have you considered something like a D5 dozer. It would make small work of the little trees and if you ran into any trouble with the bigger ones a trip around the trunk with the rippers usually loosens them up enough to be pushed over.

Re: Lot Clearing
I'm with bmartin, a D5 or 6 should do the job. You'll have enough machine there to tear out stumps and also anough detail ability with a 6 way blade to make it nice and purty after you tear a big hole in the lot.

Re: Lot Clearing
What do you plan on doing with the scrub brush and trees ??
If you are going to chip or haul them out, then you will need a machine to handle them. If you burn it then you can use the dozer, just be careful to not get too much dirt mixed up in the brush. If it was me, I would use a excavator with a thumb.

JoJo.
Just to take Rino's post 1 step further. What do you expect to do with the trees? What will you do the old stumps and under brush? What equipment do you own or have easy access to? Nck |

Re: Lot Clearing
I have a case 580 backhoe,,but I can rent just about any machine needed,,I was thinking of a dozer , just thought it I might pick up a few tricks,,I will be burning everything,,but I will talk to the owner about a chipper ,,sounds like a better idea,,,,

Re: Lot ClearingQuote:
Get a thumb for your backhoe. It won't be as fast as a excavator, but it will work. That way you can feed the chipper too.

Re: Lot Clearing
jojo,
I would agree with Rhino, If the cost of a thumb could be worked into the job you would then have it to do other work. We have rented alot of equipment but don't seem to make money when renting. Nick |

Re: Lot ClearingQuote:
I agree, I don't see the sense of renting machines when you are making payments on equipment that you don't run. Really, you don't even need a thumb. You can clear that lot with the backhoe with no problems. You just have to work with what you got. We started out with a old case dozer, backhoe and a 955L loader and we cleared lots, dug foundations, installed sanitary sewers, water mains and such.

Re: Lot Clearing
Make a profit. Learn from that job. Make a profit on the next one etc. You'll get the money to buy the machine you want. All the talk about machines on this site and others is nice but listen to Rhino "use what you got"

Re: Lot Clearing
I agree with rino and nick, IMO you should have a higher profit by using your equipment rather than renting. Last year I had a buddy come over with his tractor/backhoe to remove some trees from my yard. It took no time at all to remove the trees, he didnt have a thumb on his hoe but it would have made it a bit easier to move the trees around after they were down. I used our 743 bobcat with a grapple to load the trees into his gravel truck. If you do any amount of demolition work with your hoe maybe looking into a thumb for it would be a good move, sounds like this job might be the one that will buy you one.

Re: Lot Clearing
A thumb on my hoe sounds excellent,,,I have an extend-a-hoe,,what,,when and where to buy the best one,???,,I also could make one at my regular job if I could find plans for an extend-a-hoe,,

Re: Lot Clearing
JoJo,
Amulet manufacturing makes a HoeClamp. It needs no hydraulics and it doesn't have a stiff arm. I know a guy who has had one for ten years and he's happy. Other manufacturers may have them. I think they are called progressive linkage thumbs. Nick |
