Lifting Preferences

What do you use for lifting? Chain, nylon slings, wire rope slings or something else? What do you use and what do you use it on?

Re: Lifting Preferences

Sliding hook cables for RCP and large HDPE pipe. Nylon sling chokers for DIP and large PVC pipe. 4-way open-hook cables for trench boxes and large precast structures. 3-way tempered chains for small precast structures.

Re: Lifting Preferences

Grade 80 chains for precast manholes, concrete outlet/inlet structures, catch basins and trench boxes.

We do use wire rope for dragging the trench box. We attach it to the box with a couple clevices and I can reach out and grap the rope with the teeth and drag it.

When lifting manholes, does anyone use spreader bars ?? We have a couple spreader bars, but never used them. We just keep the chains long to prevent breaking the manhole. Has anyone ever had a problem with this ??

Re: Lifting Preferences

We use a spreader with products made by a certain manufacturer. A chain with a locking pin hangs from each end of the bar which itself is rigged to a cable. It's much easier to 'turn' manholes into position when they're rigged like this. Also. no chance of busting of the top edge of the manhole.

We use swivels. We have 4 or 5 of them. We can swing the manholes 360 degrees.

Re: Lifting Preferences

We use 2 leg sling (chain gr100) and lock pins for manholes, 4 leg for boxes shields and stuff, wire rope choke for heavy pipe, nylon for light stuff.

Re: Lifting Preferences

I'm not a big fan of chains for lifting. I've seen some pretty ugly stuff happen when chains fail including a guy that damn near lost half the side of his skull to a chain hook that flew clear when the chain failed. IMO, cables and slings serve the purpose of hoisting much better than chains.

Re: Lifting Preferences

Is there anyway to raise a concrete walkway 4ft. wide by 8ft. long it has sunk about 7in. Mudjacking is quite expensive for this small area, but it is right in front of the first step up, so it makes it a higher reach, which is a pain. Thanks Stephen

hammer it out, compact gravel/stone to subgrade, pour new, you're only talking 32 sq ft

Re: Lifting Preferences

Yep, tear it out and replace it.

Most likely will crack if you try and raise it. Then you have to rip it up anyway.

Re: Lifting Preferences
