Let You Know Tomorrow

bidding site piping for a water treatment plant tomorrow. we "would like" to see the numbers at or about $300k....our bid will be close to $260k. anybody want to bet a bud lite it goes for under $200k? cost of materials is approx $118k, but you know how it is digging at a treatment plant....tie ins, cut ins...LOTS of pipe locates/jumps...i'm sick of practicing bidding ****.

Well, I'd like to know the "time" factor but in the absence of that I'll bid $199,975 (includes bid bond 10%).
My bid strategy is like something out of that scene in Princess Bride where the two guys have a battle of wits to the death.
You see, someone will figure the job is worth twice the cost of the material ($236K). Of course being that smart they'll realize everybody knows that winning formula so therefore they'll bid lower - say $233K. But then that's just over $230K so someone's bound to bid under $230K so the right bid is probably something like $228K. But $225K looks better to the eye on paper than $228K so you should bid, say, $224,300 to sneak in under $225K. But every cheap bastard in the world knows there's at least 3% slop in any estimate so cut $6,000 just for a bidding "safety factor" so now you're at $218,300; call it $218K. But they also know they can probably pickup a couple points on change order work so give that back to the town to build in a little more competitive advantage and lower the bid to $214K. Also, fuel's bound to go back down soon so cut another couple to $212K. Then, if the job keeps you working a couple of months you'd otherwise be idle then give up another $8,000 (right? what's $200 a day to one of you fat cat contractors anyway?) and go in at $204K. Finally, if you're crazy enough to bid $204K knowing all that you do then there's probably someone who's just plain too stupid to know better who'll bid $200K. So the winning bid is, by a super-genius spread of only $25, $199,975.

Re: Let You Know Tomorrow

the apparent low GC...has a message on their estimator's phone line, saying they will not release who they're using as subs until they've had the opportunity to review all sub quotes in their entirety...or something like that...he's not picking up calls at all...and emails to his address pretty much have an auto answer/respond to the same effect. w tf knows at this point. i just might call the 2nd low GC bidder, and ask him how we sat.

The worst ones are when you are lowest bidder and then they give it to someone else that matches your price. Big kick in the balls.

Yep, that's a huge kick in the n*ts. Where's the ethics these days?

I just tell myself that I don't want to work for those guys anyways...and hope Knuckles pays a visit to him one day.

Re: Let You Know Tomorrow

Bleh--I'm sitting in the same boat. I know I was a good low with 3-4 GC's but the one who won the bid won't return my phonecalls. I've never worked with him but he was very contactable during pre-bid...now he's MIA (his bid was also 10% lower than everyone elses so that may have something to do with it...)

Re: Let You Know Tomorrow

I bid a job 2 weeks ago. I called one GC and e-mailed him, no response. Another GC I e-mailed and he said that he hasn't heard from the owners and he did not know how I did, he would have to look at the bid tabs on Monday. I hear nothing. I e-mailed yesterday, he gets back to me and says that he cannot find my bid..... WTF ?!?!?! He says that he has a meeting with the owners today and for me to send him my proposal again.
