Laser ???
We excavated a foundation and we were checking grade with our LB2 laser. With the grade checked we ran our wacker reversible plate over the area. When ever we got within 10 feet of the rod and beacon the beacon started beeping. It did not matter where the beacon was in relation to the laser. It only did it when the laser was on. It only did it in the northwest corner of the excavation. Nothing on the site but sand. Why???

The beacon was emitting the noise not the laser and the rod did not need to be touching the ground.

Maybe something to do with the magnetic field from the flywheel of the compactor................. Nick, How long have you had your LB-2, I've had mine since "86", had the Interior Rechargable Batt. in the main unit changed once. They're a good unit!

The laser has the warning beep not the target. If it is knocked out of level it will beep to warn you to check it. Wind or vibration will set it off.

Joe,
We bought ours in 88, just one battery change. Had it checked out twice. Have had both beacons rebuilt.
No complaints. I don't know that that they make a unit as durable today.

Nick,
Do use the sensor, ( magnetic mount ) that goes on the stick of the machine ? I use mine when I'm working alone, works pretty good ( with no dumb looks )

Joe,
I don't have one. Do you have to position the bucket and stick in a certain way to check grade? Is the mount complicated? How much$$$?

Nick,
I just square up the bottom of the bucket with the ground with the stick straight up and down. It's quick and works well. The mount is a big magnet that just sticks to the stick. I was leary of it moving around or falling off especially digging in ledge or rough material, but it stays put. Cost about 900.00, but you don't have to spend any money on it for breaks or lunch's so it pays for itself real quick.

No trucks anywhere near. far away from anything. I think Joe's thought on the flywheel and a magnetic field might be it.

I have had my laser go bonkers from the beam bouncing off the chrome cylinders of my backhoe. Took me a while to figure out what the heck was going on. Also have had it bounce off windows and give me bad readings.
Magnetic field? I don't think that would influence a laser, but maybe so.

Although now that I think of it our operator said he was taken up by a UFO that afternoon while he was greasing the machine and cleaning the tracks.
Naaah.

I've had the same problems. I was fine grading modified for a road and my grademan kept telling me that I am too low. I said that is impossible. Here it was bouncing off of a house and giving him a wrong reading. Also, the sunshine will cause it to beep.

A magnetic field will not effect a laser.
Nor should it effect the photo diode sensor either.
Was there another laser being used in the area?
Did you turn off the laser and run the compactor near it again (bad wiring in the detector)
Was it a low battery warning? (vibrations causing poor contact)
Or it could be ghosts........
