Just Wondering

I have always wondered what it is like to run a scraper or pull a pan? How do you grade with it? Are there a lot of problems with them?

Re: Just Wondering

Nick,
How ya doing? Not sure about pulling a pan, but they sure are a PITA to bury. Back in the 80's I bought some lots in N Milford off of 67 and back on the property, way back was an old pan, cable job. Looked like you needed a D8 to pull it. Eight lots, about 15 acres plus open space abutting, at the other end of the property was a pile of topsoil about 1000 yds., the stuff was like planting soil ( what a homerun that purchase turned out to be ) Anyways I decided to bury this dinosaur I dug for about 3 hrs with my Mits. 140 and when it looked big enough I attemted to get her in the hole Like a fly on an elephants butt! Finally got it in the hole but part of it caved in with the pan and it was above grade, no taking it back out , so I mounded the dirt over it. That thing had some steel to it. Well thats my experience with a pan. It would have been neat to see that thing in action.

Re: Just Wondering

I have a little experience with em. I've run a 615 Cat paddle wheel which actually, after grading with a backhoe bucket and not being able to see your cutting edge, was pretty simple. The paddle wheel wasn't bad to run but there is a learning curve to them. I've also run a CAT 637 scraper which is HUGE! Lots of power (engine in front and back). but didn't really do much with it. I was more curious as you are now, and hopped on and took her for a spin!!! I've pushed a lot of scrapers with a D8!!!! I know .....that doesn't count.

Re: Just Wondering

We use to call pan operators "truck drivers with their brains shook out". When you think about it, that's pretty harsh.

Never ran one, but with a good pan and dozer operator, you can move some material. I've seen some good scraper operators drop the bowl and keep the haul roads maintained better than the grader operators.
