Inhouse Welding??

This is one thing I've never really tried to do. Maybe I should just go out and buy a welder and start welding things together and give it a try. Just recently had to have the bucket on our 200sr rebuilt and beefed up, tried a place in N.Haven called Tradon (really did a great job) Although he suggested a new bottom in the bucket so he took a templet and ordered it. Do you guys do your own welding, or sub it out?

Joe,

We do all small repair welding that can be done with a stick welder. Larger things we have a welder do. I have been trying to take a course by Merriam-Graves for a couple of years. I haven't been able to get them to do a Saturday or winter course yet. Its always weekday or weeknights during busy times.

small onsite repairs, we typically do ourselves, and light "non-critical" fabricating in our shop. we all can weld good enough to get ourselves in trouble, that's why we leave the needed repairs and fabs to a local weld shop here. although, i did build us a new excavator mounted packwheel this last winter, turned out sweet

We do all of our own welding, mostly steam and chilled water lines.
However I do some repairs for other guys as well.

Try getting a book on it, some guy named Finch wrote one a few years back and it kinda took the mystrey out of welding for a lot of guys.

With the type of stuff you want to weld, I would go with a bigger stick machine rather than a wire feeder.
