Idling
For years diesel manufacturers said idling engines for 5 to 20 minutes was necessary for long engine life depending on manufacturer. Now with fuel prices, fuel additives, modern engines and even laws that have very expensive fines are you still letting that engine run?

Re: Idling
we always do a 2-3 min idle before shutdown. i can't believe it's a good thing even with today's engines to just shut the fuel off on them

Re: Idling
Yeah, got to let em cool off a few minutes, especially if the engine has a turbo. It will kill the bearings in the turbo otherwise.

Re: Idling
For warm up in the spring/summer, we let them idle for about 5-10 min. In the winter they'll run 30-45 min. For cool down, they'll run while we fuel and clean the tracks which takes 5-10 min.
