How To Make Sure Fill Is Really Certified?
I am bidding a job where we need to bring in alot of clean fill. There is a guy on craigslist in my area with free certified fill with free trucking.
How do I make sure I am really getting certified clean fill? There is a stream on this site and I really don't want to have any issues. |

Sounds too good to be true, unless they really need to get the dirt off the site. I would call the DEP or EPA and see what they have to say about it.

Call them and ask them what they mean by certified. It could mean anything depending on where you live. If it comes from a site where the soil was tested for some reason they will have the test results. Certified in some cases can mean it meets a certain specification to be used for certain type work. It can be contaminated soil that was cleaned and has papers saying what it can be used for, etc.... etc...

There are companies who do soil certification, some engineering companies do that also... they will come to the job site take soil samples, do a test and provide you with certification.

Re: How To Make Sure Fill Is Really Certified?
I've often seen 'certified fill' in reference to the known proctor test value of a certain pile of fill, not necessarily anything to do with what contaminates might or might not be in the soil.

Many places require you to get a soil permit to import/export soil and require a certification. Usually the test they preform is the PP+40 and should have a papers on the test results.

Ask for paperwork. The guy you see on CL is probably a trucking company so they are getting paid for trucking and disposal from the site they are removing it from. If you need a lot off fill and it is worth while for the guy to find a place to dump have him test the fill ($2,500.00) and give you paper work for it and make sure each load looks the same and they are not trying to sneek in fill from other sites. How much fill you looking for?

For that qualtity just go to a reputable aggregate supplier.
If there is any problem the correction cost will exceed any cost savings by many, many, times. - Even if it for a patio that settles.
