How Close Is Close Enough

How close to the required grade do you dig?

In full foundations?
What does your concrete crew require?
In footings?

In trench work?
Do you trench fast and use stone to set your grade or do you
actually dig to the grade required?

How do you overcome the tendencies of the eye to judge depth
differently when in a machine?

Re: How Close Is Close Enough

When doing foundations, I get them within 2". When doing pipework, I'll get it within 1-2" and use stone to put the pipe on grade.

I had one old guy tell me one time...... "You know, you are pretty good. When I put the sewers in up in Scranton, I kept grade within a 1/16 of a inch."

I always love hearing stories like that.....lol

How close to the required grade do you dig? +/- 1/2" or you'll either hand trim, or buy extra concrete

In full foundations? same

What does your concrete crew require? same
In footings? same

In trench work? when laying sewer main, within .01 of a foot

Do you trench fast and use stone to set your grade or do you
actually dig to the grade required? stone to set grade, much faster to overdig 3-4", most engineers require it here anyway, and kick some 3/4" rock around than hand trimming

How do you overcome the tendencies of the eye to judge depth
differently when in a machine? when doing sewer work, i can typically see where the sewer laser is hitting the top of my cutting edge i have welded to the bucket teeth, that depth normally gives me my 3-4" of rock material under my pipe
