Help W/stone Quantity
How much stone do I need to order to re-stone a 30x90 gravel parking area?
What grade of stone would be best for this? In the past, I have used either 2B or 2RC. 2B didn't pack very well, and 2RC did a nice job. Anything better? I can get shale too, but shale has a tendency to cut tires when it's brand new, and I don't have anything with tracks to run it down. Just rubber tired stuff. |

Re: Help W/stone Quantity
As far as quantity I think you could do a pretty good job with 2 triaxle loads.
It depends obviously on how thick you want the new stuff, but @ 4" I figure 34 Cubic Yards, or about 2 loads. I guess if you wanted to you could do a "skim coat" and get by with 1 load. As far as the material goes, I would use what we call around here #7's which is crushed stone that is about 5/8" washed so there is no fines. As far as using the shale, would it be cheap enough to allow you rent a little roller for the day to smack it down? |

We use the 3/4 crushed stone for some of our new garage customers. Most outfits call it driveway stone. If you google stone calculator you can find many sites that have a simple calculator to figure the tonage you need.

If you want to split hairs, figure 155 lbs./cu ft. Then add on a little extra for waste. I'd use an AB-3 or road rock, the clean 3/4 around here seems to act like ball bearings on a driveway. It just never packs in.

Re: Help W/stone Quantity
Sort of an odd question, but what is the height of a triaxel to the top of the side boards? There might be some tree limb issues, and I'd sorta like to have it dumped where it goes. I can just get my trucks in and out, and the tallest is 10',4". My other option is to have it dumped in the street, which isn't 100% legal but I'd get it moved PDQ.

Re: Help W/stone Quantity
I run into the tree issue all the time, the only solution is to dump it in a pile in the lot where you have enough room or dump it in the street and move it ASAP.
Or my personal solution on the tight jobs, have the stone delivered to my storage lot, load it on my single axle dump, off load it with my skidloader one bucket at a time. Keeps the street clean, and the neighbors happy. |

We use what is called here, 2A modified. It is unscreened crushed stone. Packs real nice. You don't want any washed stone, because it doesn't pack. People will spin their tires easily and snowplows will easily displace it. 2RC is nice stuff too, it is a little bigger but is also cheaper.
