Re: Help - I Need Some Advice From Equipment Operators.

i guess i got lucky, worked on the farm since i was 12 or 13..learned to drive tractors, by the time i graduated high school my grandad told me i was a tractor operator now not a driver. i was ecstatic.
sounds like he has genuine love of the field. i would proably hire him on attitude alone.
i frequent another board that has many operators/owners from PA.
i dont know if i am allowed to post another boards address here. send me a pm and i will give you the boards name. great bunch of guys. this is great board also, just the other one is exclusively heavy equipment.

My friend went to Penn Tech in Williamsport (right out of high school) for operators school for 2 years. He got a job with Schlouch starting out as a laborer and moved up to a operator on a pipe crew after 1 year. I think that he started out around $15/hr. I know that last fall work was slow and they only had him working around 20 hours and didn't lay him off so he couldn't sign up. He wasn't too happy about that. They are a pretty big company and do lots of work and my friend is pretty happy with them.
