HDPE Pipe Mechanical Couple

Hello everyone,
This is my first post so hopefully it's a good experience for me. I'm wondering about the alternatives, if there are any, to using heat fusion joints in order to couple HDPE pipe. Are there any mechanical means accomplishing a HDPE to HDPE couple?

Also, aoes anyone know of a good mechanical method to couple HDPE pipe to PVC pipe?

Both method needs to be suitable for burial for extended periods, say 25 years. Thanks!

Fusion weld!

I know some of the private natural gas installers around here use a fitting that looks for all the world like a SharkBite fitting that we're talking about in another thread. It's all plastic, yellow in color, and has some metallic components inside it.

We've used a brass compression coupler that has a restraint that clamps on the pipe after you get it all put together. I'm not sure exactly what its called, I just tell our pipe supplier what we're trying to do.
You could use one of these to connect to pvc.

Re: HDPE Pipe Mechanical Couple

what's the OD of your pipe? IPS, or same as c-900/ductile iron? if it's those sizes, you can get a m.j. sleeve, use regular gaskets or transition gaskets depending on OD of your pipe.

I know the fitting as a duct coupling which is used for connecting pvc to interduct(HDPE). It is PVC coated and has rubber on the inside with ribs to hold.

Re: HDPE Pipe Mechanical Couple

There are many ways to connect HDPE. However, going with mechanical couplings negates some of the great benefits of HDPE.
Here are some of the ways to connect the pipe. (Some are size dependant)
Socket fusion
butt fusion
electro fusion
mechanical couplings
Flange fittings (still involves a butt fusion)

There are plenty of transition fittings available to connect a HDPE system to almost any existing system. However, the most common ones will be butt fused. There are companies out there that specialize in HDPE and will be able to give you a catalog of what is available.

May I ask what your application is? I am curious as to why you don't want to fuse the pipe.

Mechanical joints are available and probably the best alternate method (my opinion) but you won't like the cost of them. Why can't you do the fusion?
