Gps 3d Modeling

I am curious, I was speaking with a salesman the other day. We were discussing 3D GPS Modeling for Machine Control. He said that there is a severe need of 3D Modeling Service for contractors using 3D Controls. Does anyone here have any knowledge of this being a need for a service? Myself being a Professional Surveyor in two sates and working for the past 15 years in the Heavy Civil Business (Site, DOT, and Dredging) as project management. I am interested in hearing any threads about this. Thanks.

I don't have much to add, but I do have a friend in the excavation business doing large commercial jobs and he raves about the 3D Modeling Machine Control that they use. He says that it can take pretty much any grader operator and turn them into a pro. I believe they hire out this service, but my feeling is that it is the way of the future and something to definately consider persuing.

Re: Gps 3d Modeling

There is a demand for it. However, we do ours in house. We use to takeoff our jobs with a digitizer. But now we are able to get about 90% of all our plans for bid projects in Autocad. Since we use the actual Acad line work to T/O our jobs most of the model is already built. I do know of several contractors that do not have the ability or skills to construct models and they are subcontracting the service. I think the average price is around $300. That price is contingent upon job complexity.
