Glass Coated Steel

I was wondering... is glass coated steel the same as stainless steel? And is it recyclable?

I am bidding on the demolition of a glass coated steel harvestore silo that has approximately 70,000 lbs of glass coated steel. I was wondering if this was recyclable and if anyone knew the going rate per lb or ton or however it is weighed?

Re: Glass Coated Steel

if it's the same as the harvestore silos i've seen, it's just mild steel with a fiberglass coating to avoid any corrosion from the silage that's put in there. i think the only stainless steel you're going to see on them are the bolts. the harvestores here are all bolted, i would think it might be a headache demo wise, not going to be just a pushover and pick up the pieces. i would think to get any value out of the steel, you'll have to find a way to rattle the fiberglass from the steel. here, there is no market for recycle fiberglass, you pay 2 cents a lb to take it to the landfill.

I think that you're better off pricing this as junk. Check with your re-cycler. You could burn it off but a silo would be a very big, black cloud of smoke for a few cents per pound.
