Foundation Question
Hey guys, what kind of foundation would you use for and addition on an old farmhouse in minnesota. Doesn't want a basement on the new addition. Just adding one big family room 30 x 20 and an attacted gargage 30x 40. The addition will be in between the garage and existing house. I've heard of shallow foundations but any info would be great. Thanks.

Re: Foundation Question
Down south of you in Ohio it is also footers. We usually are at 36" in depth for frost code and footer size is 8" thk x 18"wide for non coded building and 8" x 24" minimum for most coded/inspected jobs. You need to know what your local code is if any and what the max. frost depth is in your area. Most jobs that are being built to code have drawings/plans with specs. on footers.

Re: Foundation Question
If it was independent of the house you would be able to use a floating slab, but in this case you would absolutely have use frost footing foundation due to the nature of the construction. In the winter the frost heave would separate your proposed construction from your existing. You will never get an approval from the building inspector with out frost footings.
