Fluff Factor On Dirt


Does any one have an add on percentage to figure for the fluff factor?
I figure on 30 cu. yards. and haul much more .thank's

depending on soil type with out local soils....we figure 25-35%...25 being the granular, 35% being the cohesives

I usually figure on 30%.

I figure 25% for sand or gravel material. For hauling purposes I also factor in moisture content. Wet clay and I we sometimes have half full trucks.

1 cubic yard (CV) = 1.3 cubic yards loose volume (LV)
1 cubic yard (LV) = .77 cubic yards compacted volume (CV)

As they have said though, clay will be different this of course is for sand.

i'm scared we're all throwing out real vague/ballparky numbers here....what i posted earlier, is from what my prior experience has been in MY local area. anyone dealing with a critical bid....needs to hire a soils consultant and have him determine the max. dry density...given that data, we all individually after the 3rd, 4th load we haul out...determine what the fluff factor is going to be.

Yep, I should have mentioned that the conversions I threw out there are from the MNDot conversion chart. We deal predominantly with sand up here.
