Finding Orange Burg

I've dug up to 6" from the underground power line looking to replace a soil pipe. I know it's old Orange Burg pipe I'm looking for but I'm about 2 scoops short of mainland china and still haven't hit the turd worm.

I took 2 good sized fishing bobbers and tied them off on some speaker wire thinking I'd flush them down the clean out as a signal for the locator. The damn locator came, marked the utilities, then hauled a$$, totally disregarding my "Please knock" sign on the power meter.

Any good input?

Bob

what's the soil pipe Bob? A sewer? How far is the cleanout from where you're digging?

Re: Finding Orange Burg

Bob,
Have you tried locating where it leaves the foundation and following it?
It amazes me, usually the ones we seem to always look for are within a foot or so of the water line, seems like in the old days they got multiple use out of thier trenches.

Re: Finding Orange Burg

Bob,

Do you know a plumber, Roto Rooter guy or septic pumping guy that has a locator with a traceable beacon that can be put on a snake?

Those old guys also like to build nice curves in their sewer pipes.

Re: Finding Orange Burg

I'm square now.....just got off the horn with a buddy who plumbs and excavates.....we're going flush my bobbers at 7 in the morning.

That sounds a little odd......so please add fishing just before bobbers.

Nick,
I once watched Marlin Perkins put a traceable beacon on a snake, it wasn't a pretty sight. But then neither would seeing one it in a sewer pipe.

As I recall it was always 'Jim' doing the dirty work and Marlin riding high above in the chopper doing commentary. "Just as the wildebeast have trampled Jim into the hard dirt of the savanah, so can unexpected financial challenges trample your retirement dreams. That's why Mutual of Omaha's..."

Joe,

By "traceable beacon on a snake" I in no way was refering to you.

Re: Finding Orange Burg

Bob, you may want to use your basic snake and a metal detector. I can see the 'bobber idea' getting hung up on roots, grease or other crap.

Rich, I'll never forget Jim on the sands of the Nile pirouetting with a 20' croc. and Marlin (standing well up the bank) saying "We've almost got him!" WE who? I didn't see any WE!

Re: Finding Orange Burg

back in 32, we'd hand dig 10' to find our cleanout. here anyway....we call orangeburg that pipe that looks like rolled up tarpaper? we talking the same thing? and every foot you dig up is deflected down to about 1" tall? it's gotta go dude, even in the concrete slab has to go

I don't agree with dayexpo on the slab. We did 'longsides' under roads and driveways 30 yrs. ago and I'm sure that the technology is better today.

Re: Finding Orange Burg

Glass you can use a fish tape as a carrier for your locator signal. Just put it in from the clean out.

Also, if your locator uses a certain frequency, you can buy 'bullets' that are small RF transmitters to put on the end of a sewer cable or fish tape. Get the proper frequency. Use electrical tape and tape the fool out of them. Don't forget to turn it on before you splash it.

Re: Finding Orange Burg

Orangeburg was used deeper than 4' when first introduced, but it was quickly found by the manufacturers that it would deform and "oval" at depths deeper than 4'.

Glass do yourself a big favor, if you use plastic back in the hole, don't go less than Sch. 40. S&D and SDR35 is a just about >||< that much better than the Orangeburg you're using, as far as durability goes when using native back fill. Bed it in 12" pea gravel and cover to 30" with pea gravel and its good to go. Sch. 40 usually just needs the rocks removed from the first 12" of native back fill. S-weight cast iron has a life expectancy of ~70 years.

Re: Finding Orange Burg

Around the world....across the nation.....and up your...."street".....it's turd pipe update with your favorite commentator ....GlassBob.

Well I figured out why I couldn't find the burg....It runs due west, instead of south to the sewer, and picks up the bitchy neighbors house just before shooting under her beautiful garden.

So....Now I have to hammer up half the slab....negotiate the gas and water mains.....then re-tap the city sewer.......jeez. As well as dig up the frickin alley.

The building inspector made it perfectly clear that I was to properly cap the orange burg after tie......so is not to crud up the bitchy neighbors soil pipe.

I assured him that the cap would be formidable and very well placed...... right after I filled her crap pipe with concrete. Give her a little taste of the kind of crap she puts out.

Captain Cholesterol strikes again!
