Fill Tip

Just a little something I always do whenever I get a job where we are filling in excess of 3'. I take 6" solid Hancore pvc pipe and run them 5 -6' apart around the inside perimeter of the foundation walls ( vertically ) usually keep them about 4" below slab sub grade the bowling the last 4"with the fillon top of the pipe so you have sort of a funnel look. Then when they pour the slab the concrete runs down the pipe to the footings creating a pillaster to help support the slab should the dirt settle any more ( yes we do use plate compactor with 12" lifts ) Oh yeah, the concrete guys also run a band of rebar over the top of these along with the wire mesh. If there's any footings needed for lolly columns in a garage I'll use a pc. of 18" corrugated plastic drainage pipe cut to length needed and fill that with concrete also.

Re: Fill Tip

Good idea, but we never put footings on compacted material. We will just dig down to solid ground and the mason will lay a wall up to the top of the footing. We did one job years ago on a slope that had 22' of pitch just where the house was. The one side of the house had 16 courses of block just to get to footer height.......plus 13 courses for the house.

Re: Fill Tip

Rhino,
Think you misread my post, I never said or ever put footings on compacted fill. The tubes run down on footing of walls, the footings for lolly's go down to virgin soil.

Re: Fill Tip

Are you talking about basements or garage's....or both ?

So, you are saying that when you have to use a wall to bring it up to footer height, that you fill the inside of it with dirt and then compact it ?

Re: Fill Tip

I understood your first post perfectly Joe.
You draw more better than I do.

Around here we put grade beams in the garage slabs and support them that way. No one takes the time to do compaction. At least that's the way with the tract homes.

Re: Fill Tip

Tgeb,
Last week I filled a 1 car garage 16' x 22' on the back side with 12' of fill compacted in 12" lifts. The front was around 5' deep.

Re: Fill Tip

Often times we have trouble locating fill that is suitable for compaction.
It will be too wet, to much oganic mixed in, or to rocky.

Do you have it tested in garages when you fill them this way?

Re: Fill Tip

Oh, i see now Joe. I thought you were talking about basement footers, now I see that you were talking about the garage's and frost walls.

Anyway, do most of you guys use dirt to fill the garage and frost walls ???

We use mine rock, which is basically shale on top of coal. We buy it pretty cheap, for only $30 a load. If you look good enough, you might be able to find some coal in it too.

Re: Fill Tip

Rhino,
Wow $30 / ld. what a bargain! The best I've come up with is $250 / ld. for screened fill up around where we work

Re: Fill Tip

rino, we fill a lot of garage areas with clay or granular fill. BUT, we insist they hire a soils engineer to take density tests as we progress to be able to document it was done properly, and that the soil we're using to fill with will bear the load of the structure they're building on it
