Question Faulty Hydraulic Hose

Anyone ever have a problem like this? We have a Kobelco 200SR I was operating the morning after Halloween. I was working on a long accessway to a rear lot, had the boom raised high and the stick about 3/4 of the way out talking to my other operator on the nextel. All of a sudden I hear a pop and out of the corner of my eye I see a blur (my head was turned) then BAM! I looked like this the stick and 4' bucket came down crashing into the cab ( 2 teeth 10" through the glass) luckily the bucket was empty. The machine does have a Quick Disconnect on it which will allow the bucket to make contact with the cab. To make a long story short a hose on the stick cylinder didn't break but blew right out of the crimp on the fitting causing the stick to free wheel into the machine. Ins. paying for new cab(20K) with labor for changing. On it's way from Japan. I've had hose cuts or leaks before but never a complete failure and just wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen? By the way I was fine just pcs. of glass all over everywhere.

Jeeze.... I thought most machines had decel valves in the cylinders to slow down the boom and such during such catastrophic failures? Anyhow, it sounds like perhaps a field made hose where someone used an ASME crimp die on a metric ferrule or vice-versa. Maybe even a crimp with a worn crimp die. Glad you were okay. If someone was hurt, the first thing I'd want to do is procure that failed fitting for forensic meausrement of the final crimp dimension. Scary....

The ins.co. had a special adjuster who deals with equip. failures come down from Mass. he took the hose and was getting it analized. The machine is a 2002 with about 3000hrs on it. I never remember replacing that hose and it looked like a factory hose to us. Whats really scary is I always hollar at the laborer or any one else for that matter about going under the bucket or near the machine while it's being worked, this deffinatly would have put a hurting or killed someone.

Sometimes you just get a bad crimp, fractured ferrule, bad section of hose.....sometimes stuff just happens.

Joe,

Did the insurance company inspector ever let you know what they thought the cause of failure was.
