The Expense Of Diesel

Yesterday On Road Diesl, was posted at $2.99 here. Do you adjust pricing for rises in fuel costs? How much does the price of fuel have to change before you would adjust? What changes in driving or operation would you make to save on the cost of fuel?

Re: The Expense Of Diesel

I think on road diesel here is $2.80/gal.

I'm not sure what I pay, I have fuel delivered to a tank here in bulk. Then fuel up here at home. I would always get pissed off when I would divide the bill out to see what I was paying per gallon. So I stopped really looking at it, just pay it and move on.

Sometimes I pay more than I would at the pump, sometimes I pay less.
The convenience of having a tank here is nice.

As far as passing the increases on, I am trying to get my rates up over all.

To save fuel I use my big truck less, 95 Volvo with an N14 Cummins.
Try not to make unnecessary trips to job sites.
I am thinking of a longer trailer so I can haul a mini excavator and skid loader together, and save a trip that way.

The hard part is trying to get ahead of the price increases. A job I bid today may not start till September or October, who knows what fuel prices will be then?

When bidding jobs, we add it into the cost of the bid. When working by T & M......we might add a extra half hr here or there.

I bumped prices up $5.00 / hr. and I'll throw in a few hundred on quotes for fuel, coffee, and occasional lunches.

Re: The Expense Of Diesel

I started adding a little more to the jobs last yr when fuel prices were going up and have kept it in there, does'nt bother me so much on local in town jobs, but every once in awhile we're 30 minutes out and that adds up quickly.I'm only fueling trucks, but when I rent equipment if my guys take it back low I get billed $5/gallon for the rental shop to refill it

Re: The Expense Of Diesel

invoice dated 04/06 $2.72 for off-road delivered to 500 gal tank - I gotta' find a better (less expensive) supplier. I can almost buy highway fuel for that from the pump.

I started putting this in my quotes:
"Given the current price volatility of petroleum products, reasonable increases to the subcontract amount shall be made should the price of high sulfur diesel, delivered to the site, move above $2.75 per gallon or the published price of crude oil exceed $77 per barrel.".

I'm just about there.
