Excess Inventory
how do you guys handle getting rid of excess/oddball inventory? things that were special ordered for an unusual job, wanted to make sure you had it on hand, ended up not needing it/them, and your supplier doesn't really want them back? i have probably about a 12 yd. dump truck full of stuff that's taking up space here. tried ebay? have auction at your premises?

Re: Excess Inventory
Why Not Donate it to a charitable organization that does rehab ( a lot of church groups do this ) or Habitat for humanity. They will give you a receipt for the value of your donated merchandise and you can most likely claim it as a donation on your taxes.

Re: Excess Inventory
most of these items have too much value to throw it in the dumpster, has a use/value to somebody. i can't imagine any church, charitable organization that could use these items. it's not as though we're talking a bundle of precut 2x4's, or a pallet of 1/2" sheetrock. it's oddball stuff

Re: Excess Inventory
I don't know Day, Maybe the thing to do is pallet the stuff up in like "lots" and take it to a local auction.
Around here there are auctions that take place a couple times each year and anyone can put anything in they like, construction related of course. I have seen everything from used windows to new rough cut lumber to trailers, welders you name it. Other than that I have no clue.

Sorry' I based my reply on the assumption that it was building materials.

Re: Excess Inventory
We have stuff like that laying all around our yard. I guess that we feel that we will actually use it someday.

Re: Excess Inventory
Now you have made me curious... I was just thinking building material myself as well... Fill us in a little bit, you never know you might find a buyer here.

Re: Excess Inventory
Gee!
How hard is it to start an internet database for listing these kinds of materials available?

Re: Excess Inventory
I was kinda wondering the same thing. I've got a crapload too. I was thinking of snapping pics (if I ever get the time) and just listing the items on eBay perpetually until I get a decent reserve. It doesn't cost but a few cents to renew an auction for another 7 days.

Re: Excess Inventory
Anyone that does pipe work might appreciate this. I worked for a guy that took a tandem dump truck full of 21" megalugs (still strapped in bundles) to the DUMP rather than return them or store them in the yard and make everyone aware of his ordering mistake.
What kind of "oddball stuff" are we talking here Mr. Day?

Re: Excess Inventory
oddball ferncos, oddball sdr35 eccentric and coeccentric gasketed reducting couplings, some AC pipe and machined pieces "these goin to the dump", about 15 valve box bottoms "you know, the bottoms never get hit" some compression couplings from tubloid to copper, lead to copper, galvanized to copper, 12" gasketed sdr 35 45's and 90's...man, these are big and dust collectors left over from a huge dairy barn job. some manhole, curb inlet castings that the engineer HAD to spec some weird oddball thing, then decide not to use, we have to use all , crap can't remember the name...the blue colored bolts for our m.j. stuff now, have about 3-4 boxes of m.j. bolts that will go to the scrapper. about 40 rolls of ramneck "$18 a roll new"....our manhole vendor says they'll all be o-ringed next year...much more crap i can't remember unless i look at it and wipe the dust off em.

Re: Excess Inventory
I worked for several years as a GM for a company that's been around 50+ years. They have a yard/shop full of 'old' materials and equipment like you wouldn't believe. When I was there it was at the point where room for the things we needed to park/store daily was limited by the space occupied by junk collections.
I contacted some scrap guys, a local supply house and a used DIP merchant and made a pretty good dent in the mess. Over the course of some weeks we loaded out what was probably a dozen tractor-trailer loads of 20 year old ductile/cast-ron pipe and 10-20 dump truck loads of scrap. The supply house bought a dozen or so old fire hydrants and dozens of old gate valves (full of bee's nests in the bonnets) for parts as well as a truck load of old, full-body, cast-iron MJ fittings. Despite lots of phone calls, I never could find a way to shred or chip the mountain of scrap PVC pipe or peddle the highway trailers full of things like out-dated road signs, jute, lead wool, pneumatic "missiles" that don't run, transite 'shorts', service saddle straps, and tons of MJ bolts. In general, my rule(s) of thumb for 'extras' are: -Pay vendors to restock items as neccesary. -Scrap all metals after a year of collecting dust unless its pipe larger than 12" diameter or a special order casting or fabrication in which case I try to sell it to a supplier (even at a deep discount). -Trash or sell fabricated (welded) PVC fittings smaller >12" after a year of collecting dust. -Trash shorts of plastic pipe <15" -Store 'shorts' of plastic pipe >15" diameter only 'as needed'. - Never bring valve box bottoms in from a job.
