Excavator Mounted Iron Shear

had a manufacturing plant burn down here several wks ago. they are requesting bids for the demo/cleanup. it is a 60k sq ft steel frame/skinned building with an est. 400 ton of iron to remove/salvage. do any of you own/use/rent an excavator mounted linkage operated shear? (linkage operated means it takes the place of your bucket, no extra/auxiliary hydraulics. good brands, what to look for. i don't want to spend a pile of money on one because it will become a lawn ornament once this job is done i'm afraid.

Day have you checked some of the larger machine dealers around you? Maybe they have a unit (shear) you could rent for your machine.

yes, and out here on the prairie....it's something that has never been called for, so none of them have it on their inventory. i may have to call some dealers in minneapolis and see what shakes there.

Day,

I've never used one. I've seen them on machines. Talking to an operator about them the thing he stressed was the right jaw for what it is you will be cutting. What kind of steel and the thicknesses is what makes it productive.

Re: Excavator Mounted Iron Shear

the biggest ibeam appears to be like a 8 x 12.....maybe 3/8" steel. my wife is HR manager for a cutting torch manufacturer here, i can get great deals on that kind of thing, salvage torches, etc...but man, that looks #1, dangerous...#2 a lot of consumeables (oxy/accetylene/tips)....#3, it's cold here this time of year. be nice to do the bulk of that work inside of a cab.

I'm not in excavating but when i was working at Lambuea field during the remodel they had some monster machines with claws that just ripped threw the metal beams with ease. It was pretty neat to see how fast they could bring things down with a jaw. The reach was of thier arms was super long. Something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGSvp...eature=related

Day,

I would call Bruce Knight with Ziegler in Minneapolis 952.888.4121. Tell him Blake with SpeckTacular companies sent you, so that I can get some WILD tickets lol. just kidding. He will hook you up with whatever you need. Great guy to work with, machine will show up to the second of what he tells you. He should be able to send out a 345 or 330 with a metal shear. Good Luck.

Spendy to rent but more spendy to buy.

Re: Excavator Mounted Iron Shear

A friend of mine's Dad used to work for a steel and scrap recycler in Tacoma. We went down there once years ago to see how everything worked.

On some of the excavators they used LaBounty shears. The company is still around, but is now owned by Stanley. He says they worked good and were fairly simple to work on and not too many problems.

Found a link for you for the LaBounty BLS shears. The BLS means Bucket Linkage Shear.
