Excavating A Bowl Shape
I am working on a bid in which I need to remove an area of concrete 60'x85' and create a bowl shaped retention area. The retention area will need to be 5' at it's deepest point and have approx. a 1' rise for every 5' feet of run.
How do I figure out how many cubic yards of material has to be removed? |

Re: Excavating A Bowl Shape
1 ft. rise X 5 = 25 ft. = R
R sq'd = 625 X pi (3.1416) = 1963.5 sq. ft. or the area of a 50 ft. circle. V = A X 1/2D V = 1963.5 X 2.5 = 4908.75 cu. ft. Divide 4908.75 by 27 and you get 181.8055 cu. yds. About 15 lbs of High Explosive @ 7 ft deep should do all of your rough work in the flash of an eye. LOL

Re: Excavating A Bowl Shape
Ok, I guess that makes sense. The thing I see is that this is formula is for a circular bowl. Is there a way to figure a oval shaped bowl as this one would be?
I have never been the best at math. |

Re: Excavating A Bowl Shape
While you're at it, please give him the total cubic feet of water that would be in the pond if the pond was four foot deep.
Then please give him the total circumference of the pond from the water line and also at the leading edge of the oval to be excavated. Then will you please estimate the number of fish that could occupy the said area if this pond should be stocked. Also, if the average price per fish is $2.73 could you estimate the final cost it would be to stock said pond. Please do not forget the local sales tax. Just figure a free delivery charge for the fish. Finally could you please calculate the life span and reprductive ranges per fish to determine when the next time the pond would need to be replenished, if at all. What I am looking for is the exact amount of weeks, days and hours that the fish population would need to be replenished or would be considered overgrown. Sorry to be a pain, but I lost my calculator. |

Re: Excavating A Bowl Shape
Wingnut, lets not be splitting hairs, base your bid on 250 yds. Twenty yds. one way or the other shouldn't make the deciding factor wether you get the job or not.
Peladu, you crack me up! Good to see you again!

Re: Excavating A Bowl ShapeQuote:
Sounds good. I like that idea. This job is just a lot bigger than what I'm used to and involves a lot more work. The main reason for taking on the whole project is to get the landscape side of the bid. Just trying to be close so I can figure my costs to make sure this job is profitable. Peladu, I like to think I have a pretty good sense of humor and tend to be on the sarcastic side myself but think your post above is pretty useless IMO. Maybe I haven't been around here enough to understand your humor but to be honest a post like that to someone new to the forums may be a turn off to some people. |

Wingnut,
Peladu has a whacked sense of humor , sort of like myself, he's a good ol' boy.

Re: Excavating A Bowl Shape
Wingnut, you have to take everyone here with a little sense of humor. especially Peladu, I mean just look at him
Any way I came up with almost 365 cu yds to make that hole in the ground. If you have to haul it, better figure more for the swell factor. ![]() I looked at it as if it where a stadium, flat field in the middle, round on the ends, squared out in the center. ran some rough calcs. that's what I came up with. Teetorbilts figuring was correct, but he was calculating for a round bowl. Again make sure you add for swell. I have done some soil that doubled by the time it hit the truck. That can kill you if you budget for 25 loads and have to haul 40. ![]() Tom |
