Equipment & Operator Billing

For years our company has lumped epuipment and operator as one line item for T&M purposes. Does anyone have experience with separating equipment time and operator time on your invoice and the reaction from your customers?

Welcome to the site.

Sure I separate the costs sometimes. But rarely will I bill it that way.

Often these builders will want to squeeze me on the rate we charge by saying something along the lines of "he was only running the machine for 6 hours and helped the plumber for 2 hours, so I am only paying for six hours".

Well, we all know that the operator has to be onsite, and the machine has to be onsite for the duration of the day.

I started charging a rate for the machine per day and then a rate for the operator per day.

I can get a backhoe from the rental place for 250/day plus fuel so lets say it's 300/day for the backhoe, and to cover all insurance and benefits I have to charge 50/hr for the operator. They pay 700/day for the backhoe with operator.
Then it really doesn't matter what the operator is doing as long as he is there and productive or at their disposal in some way, it works out OK.

If I get any complaints on our rates, I tell em to rent a machine and put one of their own yahoo's on it and see what it cost's then.
