Dirt Pile

Can you look at a pile of soil and estimate the cy's. Do you just guess? Do you measure in some fashion? This could be an interesting question. If the pile is large and well packed you could be quite a bit off with swell factor included. Could mean a lot of $$$$$

Re: Dirt Pile

I worked for a super for many years and he had an uncanny knack at looking at huge piles of sand and estimating them within 10-15 yards. He'd ask us all the time..."How many yards do you think we have there??" He'd look a sec and proclaim....I'd say about 45,000 yards ....When the haul sheets were tabulated...he'd be close EVERY TIME! I'm pretty good with smaller piles, but usually for our type of work I just know when to stop hauling off. Ya always have to keep a little extra!!!
