I have never seen a 50 series, but when I was involved with OTR trucking, my Freightliners had 60 series engines, up to 500 hp...impressive. I understand the 4 stroke detroits are going out of production this year, in favor of the Mercedes heavy truck engine. Bad move.

Yea joasis, those mercedes engines, they way they are designed i really dont like em. If you wipe a cam, you have to pull the whole motor down to get it out. Unlike the 60 series, you just pull the valve cover off, pull the jakes off and rocker arms and you've got access to the cam. Only thing about the mercedes engine. I know a guy that's got a 2006 tandem axle sterling 300hp mercedes engine. He says he gets 15mpg and says its the most fuel efficent truck he has ever had. Seems kinda crazy doesnt it.

Re: Which Detriot Diesel Engine Do You Guys Think Is The Best One?
when I was in the trucking business, we ran 48 states, and I would like to see a 300 hp Mercedes engine run the mountains pulling 80,000....and get 13mpg. I averaged 6.5 mpg on 470 - 500 ponies, and could pull grades with no problem. What I have heard is Daimler AG, which owns Freightliner and Detroit, is writing the rules now, based on they "own" 60% of the class 8 market and also "own" the Detroit parts network...so they are in the driver's seat for sure.

Re: Which Detriot Diesel Engine Do You Guys Think Is The Best One?
The best Detroit enginge I ever saw was one with 2 12 gauge slugs in it!
Sorry I had to say that. They have done alot of work building this country. The idea of part interchangebility within a series was a big cost saver for many a company? They are just too noisy. In air compressor's, Dynahoe backhoe's and Drott excavator's and Bucyrus Erie Shovels and dragline's over the years. And I sit here wondering why my ears ring when all the time. We have had 2 8.1L V8's that I have to say served us well.

Re: Which Detriot Diesel Engine Do You Guys Think Is The Best One?
all of my experiance with detroits comes from marine engines. in that application they are awesome. 12/71TI's seemed to be bulletproof, we would run them hard for hours on end. 92 series engine ran good but for some reason we had better luck when they were naturrally aspirated. 149's had problems, the turbo's liked catching fire. most of the oilfield crewboats of the 70's and 80's ran 12/71ti's with 4/53 or 6/53 for generators. best combination for a boat that size. i'm trying to learn that cat makes good engines and equipment. on the boats i remeber to many times waiting for the power to come on with 398's or 399's. they just don't rev like the detroits or EMD's. no sub for an EMD.

Mine is boat experience as well, the 53 and 71 NA's are staples. Try and boost them and problems start. I never did like the 92's as most of them were T or TA's.
Pic of me during the diesel days (circa mid 70's). That's a Cat undergoing a major.

EMD= electro motive diesel. EMD is/was part of GM. kind of picked up where the detroit diesels left off. were popular in trains and higher HP tugboat applications.
