Re: Demolition

We have done demo work in the past (schools and houses). We like to stay away from it. Not worth getting involved with DEP, asbestos testing and landfills. We'll stick to dirt and pipe work.

Re: Demolition

Wolf,

We're not a Demolitiopn specific contractor we do some demolition. Mostly single family homes, barns and other buildings. We do a good amount of concrete demolition.

Did a lot of demolition in the late 60's and the 70's for Urban Redovelopement in southwest CT city's, big jobs then. 977 CAT's and Cable machines.

I still enjoy knocking things down with the tracked loader.

Re: Demolition

^ Yeah, my dad demo'ed a school back in the 70's. One of the reasons that it was being torn down because it had wooden steps and were considered unsafe. There was a stone monument on the 2nd floor of the guy who the school was named after. They needed to get it out so my dad took a 450 Case track loader up the wooden steps to get it out.

BTW, do you guys still run any 977's ?? We have a 977L with a m/s ripper that we use quite a bit. It is a great machine and I love running it.

Re: Demolition

rino,

We have a 955, The 977 is to big for the work we do now. We bid a job where we might think of buying a 977 if we could find a good one. We are looking to buy a 955L or 953 though.

Re: Demolition

Denick:

Urban redevelopment is a great excuse to wreck everything in sight. That must have been a blast doing the demo in inner city CT in the sixties. Those were the good old days of demo, when nobody cared what got torn down. (Nowadays, the hysterical preservation people get excited about every little old building coming down.)

In the sixties and seventies, I bet you got to do entire blocks in those CT cities. That must have been fun!

And you did it with the CAT 977. That is my favorite wrecking machine too. I noticed you asked about favorite machines in a separate post.

I love wrecking with the 977 loader. Nowadays, most of the wrecking is done with the excavators, as I am sure you know. That is fun too, but the 977 rocks.

The reason I like the 977 so much is that you really feel the building coming down around you. With the excavator, you are much farther away from the action, due to the long stick.

But running the 977, you're really on top of the action. There is nothing like the feeling of driving that machine right through an old house or building. Feeling the walls caving in around you. And then you get to make a big pile of the debris and drive the CAT on top of it.

Probably the most fun I ever had wrecking with one of them was when we did an old movie theater. I drove the 977 right through the lobby, crashed through the doors into the auditorium, and used it to rip the seats right up.

Re: Demolition

Yeah, it is kinda hard to beat those old cat track loaders. I just can't see spending the money for a fairly new 953 or 963. We have a 955K also that has been a real good machine to us. We mainly use them for building detention basins and carrying rip rap. We also use the 977 in our shale pit to rip the shale and load trucks.

Re: Demolition

Wolf,
I would say 80% of the jobs we do involves teardowns in lower Fairfield County. In the past couple oy years we've taken down 5 ourselves under someone elses demo license. We now sub. out 100% of our demos, as mentioned by Rino it's just not worth the hassel dealing with asbestos, taking out permits ect., not to mention the cost of the insurance premiums. The co. we now use handles all the issues associated with the teardowns. What part of the country are you at? BTW welcome to the group.

Nick:

That is a great picture, and congratulations for getting in the newspaper that way. Great publicity.

I get excited just seeing how you lift the bucket up over the roof getting ready to trash the joint.

Isn't it fun to smash it through the roof that way? Love that crashing and crunching.

Boy that must have been fun! How old was that place you wrecked? Looks like a real old house, my favorite kind of job.

You got any more awesome pictures like that?

Rino:

How did the wooden steps in that school react to the track loader on top of them? Must have been fun? Dangerous? What a cool demo job that must have been. Any more great stories like that?

Not sure, my dad did that back in the 70's. I just turned 25 today. Long before my time.

Happy Birthday to you.

Welcome to the quarter of a century club, old man.

Now, get off the computer and go out and celebrate big time (safely, of course).

Have a great one. Good talking to you about the cool demo , and talk to you soon.

Re: Demolition

oh, yes, I know that story well. My little guy fell sound asleep as we were going to go out for my (ahem) 30th birthday celebration. So, we ended up with takeout Mexican in the hotel room in Napa Valley where we had gone.

But it's those times that are the most memorable. Have a great one and keep those good stories flowing.

P.S. Love your comment about the Second Amendment.
