Question Cost Based Bidding Vs Spreadsheet

I've been in business for 28 years and have been looking seriously for the past 5 years for bidding software tailored to the excavation business. I know there are no 2 project alike and that single item seems to make my searches for bidding software all the more difficult. We currently use excel spreadsheets that we customize to each project we bid but the cost based software intrigues me in that if we have a sudden rise in fuel costs you simply input the new price per gallon and the software would calc the new operating cost and you could always have a better idea what your approximate hard dollar cost per project should be. In this current economic downturn being competitive is getting harder and harder when my competition seems to be bidding below my cost. We currently use Paydirt, Terramodel, and Carlson for estimating and 3D GPS grade modeling. On projects of less than 2 acres, I typically do a quick written estimate that I base my proposal on. The larger projects are entered into various excell sheets that report to a master sheet. What is everyone else using-any suggestions would be appreciated.

Heavy Bid by HCSS. Because we are so small we use the lite version. I don't know if they still offer the lite version. Best support of any software.
