Concrete Driveway Demolition

I'm in need of some advice as to how to charge for removal of old concrete driveways. I've got a couple of clients wanting new driveways due to subsidence and pitting. They are standard 4" maybe 6" slabs. They'll have to be jack hammered, old concrete removed, some excavating, rock brought in, the usual. I've done this kind of thing before enuf times but usually family and friends.

If anybody would jump in and throw some numbers out I'd appreciate the help greatly.

Thanx

Re: Concrete Driveway Demolition

Beamer, Its really not difficult at all. First do you own the equip. needed for the job or do you have to rent it? I would use a skid steer set up with a demo hammer and then use the bucket to load it outonto a small dump. You have to be able to decide with whatever you end up using how long it will take you to do the job considering however much area you are doing. Figure how much you want to earn for your endevers, plus the cost of any rental equip. or what you need to make if you own the equip. It's really elementry stuff, so you'll sink or swim, but you'll know better on the next one, hopefully.

Re: Concrete Driveway Demolition

It all depends...are the driveways for sure 6 inches or only 4? For sure have steel in them? Are the only pitted or are they cracked out? The last one tells you how much work may be in front of you. I charge as much to take them out as I do to form and poor new concrete, but I own equipment that makes it a piece of cake.

Re: Concrete Driveway Demolition

I would take a cutoff saw and make a few cuts. If the driveway is really big, maybe rent a walk behind saw. Then I would use a excavator to break it up and load it into a truck. Hopefully, the mason didn't go rebar crazy and load it up with rebar.

Measure the driveway and figure the yardage of concrete to be hauled away. If the pieces are too large, then you can't haul as much because there will be voids in the box. For a cutoff saw, we get $15 hr or $80 a day. That isn't inlcuding operator. If you rent one, then find the cost of it to rent and add a % for markup. Also, you will have to find a place to dump the concrete. It would be a good idea and save you some money if you can set it up where you dump the concrete and pick up a load of stone on the way back.

Figure out how many loads it will take and how much time you will have into it to come up with a price.

Re: Concrete Driveway Demolition

Beamer,

Your question is "how much to demolish a concrete driveway?"

You don't know how thick?

You don't say if reinforced?

You don't say how bad they are?

You don't say how wide, long or anything about shape?

You don't say anything about existing conditions around the driveways?

You don't say what equipment you own?

You don't say what trucks you own?

You don't say if you have access to rental trucks and equipment?

You don't say if you will dispose of the concrete off site? how far a haul it is? do you have to pay to dispose?

You don't say the area you work in to gauge costs?

You do say you've done this before!

You don't say wether you have enough experience to do these jobs as a contractor and guarantee your work. It is very expensive to replace a driveway done incorrectly.

I've only started to list the things I need to know to price a job. And this is only for the demolition.

You did ask for numbers to be thrown out. If you just need numbers you should ask some one doing this work near you that you think is reputable that has some relation to the way you would be doing the work?

If you would like help learning how to put your own numbers together the people on this site can be a great help.

BUT, you will only get out of this place as much as you put in. The costs each contractor has varies greatly by contractor. Then add in that the people giving you advice can be 3000 miles away and in a tremendously different economic climate, using someone's NUMBERS could do you a lot of harm.

I didn't even start on base prep or concrete forming or pouring.

If I can be of help let me know

Beamer, this is easy to price, take your age, multiply it times the temperature of your trucks cigarette lighter, divide that by the tire size, then add your total to the square root of the house number....

Cake baby.

Re: Concrete Driveway Demolition

Umm,

What Nick said.

A lot of variables to look at, a small job will cost Waaaay more per sq.ft. than a large job.

Hey Glass, just for future reference, Is that the temp before pushing the lighter in, or after it pops out?

Not where you live?

I will stand in as a witness for masons dead and living that I have personally known that number over 50. And those uncountable others. The ones I've known with heritages of Irish, Swedish, German, Swiss, English, Spanish, Greek, Portuguese, American, Lithuanian and Italian. Of Just about every skin color of the human race. With a collective experience in the masonry business of over 2000 years.
Who from 1900 until quitting time today between Boston and New York City have built some of the most artistic, attractive and durable masonry in the country with stone, brick, block, stucco and many other materials.
It was and is my honor and privilege to hear about, watch and work along side of them as they formed, poured and finished what is probably over 100,000 cy yards of concrete. I have spent many nights past midnight with these men waiting for flat work to set up to be finished by hand.

Maybe some masons don't pour concrete
