Cat D7G ???

Does anyone have experience with a CAT D7G Bulldozer?

We have somethings coming up where we might be able to utilize a larger dozer but something that is versitale. I also would want to keep the investment between $30,000 to $50,000. This would not be an everyday machine. We would like the machine to be able to move quite a few LARGE surface rock.

Anything to look for when going over a machine to buy? Any known cronic problems?

IMO, the 7 is a little too large to fit the "versatile" requirement.

Are you looking at ripping rock or pushing boulders?

yeah....I would hardly categorize a D7 as versatile. My uncle had one. They only used it to push up rubble piles.....that's how versatile one of those babies are! I would think some of your prerequisites would be wide pads, 6-way blade, etc.

I agree that a machine with a 6 way blade would be more versatile. If you want a pushing dozer, how about looking at a D6D.

Re: Cat D7G ???

There were a lot of 7's here in oil country...but their drawback is hauling...12 wide blade and heeeaaaaavvvvvyyyyyyyy! They get used here for ripping shale in pits, but rarely do you see one being moved to a location. Most all heavy dozer work here is done with D6 high tracks...geez...you know you are old when you remember a D6D coming out, and thought it was state of the art. Such an improvement over the 6C, it wasn't funny. I have never ran a high track, but the operators tell me it is worlds better then 6D.....

Wow, you haven't run a high track???? Well put it this way. The new 8R's or T's...whatever they are now......are 10 times faster than the old 6D's. That's the 8's, so imagine if you strap yourself into a 6R. My uncle has 20 of them. They are by far the greatest dozer our there. Side note here.......2 years ago my uncle gave up the last D6D in his fleet to make room for another 6R. The D6D he traded in was the granddaddy of the 6D's ......The Magnum! That was a sweet dozer in it's day..

Re: Cat D7G ???

Well TMatt, the first cat I ever ran was a D6BU, floor sticks and all...I ran one older once that had the air cleaner back in front of the operators seat....I don't remember what model it carried, but you started it with a crank on the pony engine, and then standing on the track, engaged the starter drive and clutch....what a beast! Wish I had a picture of it.
