Buying A Truck

I went on a 3 hour ride today to L. I. NY to look at a Mack ten wheeler. I'm thinking of buying it for the Boulder job we hope to get approved this Tuesday. I am sitting here just going over all that will go along with registering it, inspection DOT requirements.

Why am I thinking of doing this again?

Anyone want to talk me out of it?

Stay away from Avon mountain! Not making light of it, because that was so horrible - but have either of you with commercial vehicles felt the effects of the commercial crackdown?

Deb,
I tend to stay off 684 or 95 by exit 2. I drive a newer vechicle but just don't like the inconvenience of having to be having to go into the check points on a day to day basis. Although I do feel their needed.

Yeah - you are lucky in a sense. You don't have to deal with the
Q bridge like I do. I think I am only 4 years into the 10 year project I just don't get it... they widen it to three lanes, but then it goes back to two. 95 should be 3 lanes from North and South through the whole state.

Re: Buying A Truck

We have DOT or MVD here once a week. Just try to a void them as much as possible.

If they were to inspect passenger cars and drivers the way they do trucks and their drivers the roads would be safer!

Isn't that the truth!!

As far as the truck purchase:
What will be the duration of this project?
What will it cost you to hire a truck to move the materials?
What if you hired 2 or 3 trucks per day, to increase production?
What use will you have for this truck after this project is complete?
Do you have a driver (not you)?
Tags and insurance $$$ ?
And all the DOT requirements, Paperwork hassles?

See where this is going?

I have my single axle dump that I use mostly to pull my backhoe around with and haul small loads of stone. Anytime I have a quantity of material to move, I hire trucks. Let someone else deal with the regulations, repairs etc.

Giving Nick a taste of the questions?

Re: Buying A Truck

I drove a friends tri-axle Mack all day today. It's been 18 months since we had our truck on the road. It seems a lot longer.

I'm only considering buying the truck because of the difficulty factor of the job and the heavy dutyness of the truck.

I'll have to make up my mind by tomorrow night.

Re: Buying A Truck

How long will this job last?
How much will you make on this job?
Would it be cheaper to use a subcontractor?
Would it be better to buy a tractor & dump trailer?
Do you have a need for this truck AFTER the job?
Plus all the others tgeb brought up.

These questions need to be answered before you buy that truck. BTW even if the truck isn't needed after this job you could buy and then resell it, I know lots of guys who do that, they take a risk but you use the right equipment for the job, test it out to see if you really would like to "own" that piece of equipment for a long periond of time, if not then you just resell it.

If you need the truck and you will be using it and have a need for it then I would say go ahead with it. Its just liek any other piece of equipment you could probobly even compare this purchase to a tree guy like my self think of buying a tubgrinder for the big lot clearing job you have a contract for. Its all up to if you get the job, what needs you have, and if you think that this truck would benefit your business.

If you do get it be sure to post some pics up of it and the job.
