A Better Distibution Box

When we get a call from customers for a wet spot in their yard or septic smell almost every-time it can be traced back to the distribution box of their septic system. Most of these systems were installed by a good installer but we find the outlet pipes to the fields are no longer level with each other and one row of the fields is getting all the flow. It only takes a 1/4" of settling for this to happen. The distribution box seems to be the weak link in drainage systems.

Last septic system I installed I set the Dbox in concrete slurry. Around 1.5' around and up to the bottom of the lid.

Nick,
When I do a system I'll only use concrete D- boxes ( never the PVC or plastic types ) as they are IMO to flimsy and to hard to keep level.
I always will set the D- box on a 4 - 6" bed of stone. I'll put a couple of stakes around the D- box so when covering the system they don't accidently get run over and nocked out of kilter.
What else ya got?

Nick, ever think of using a closed loop system(if there is enough room),,and forget the Dbox?,,I have installed a few and they seem to work well...

jojo & Day,

Most everything here is engineered so you build what someone draws.

Is it possible to talk to the engineer's,,sometimes they over think a problem or get stuck on one kind of system,,,with a closed loop system if all your pipes are on virgin soil & stone there doesn't seem to be much room for movement,,I for one like them,,

jojo,

you can talk to an engineer and he might change something but most have their pet way of doing things and don't like to vary that. You also need to talk to them before the plan is done so that it doesn't cost more to redraw the plan. Many times you get the finished plan when you first look at the job.

Re: A Better Distibution Box

Had to move a septic tank for an addition to a house and dug up the D box to move the line. Concrete D box, 4 outlet pipes, 20 years old.

Box has settled 2". It is completely deteriorated. It has been feeding one line for years. Other three are like new. The one taking all the effluent is really only disbursing to first 30' of that trench. This system put in by a reputable installer with all good materials.

The Distribution box is the weak link again.
