Re: Best Fabric To Use

I just finished up a septic system in Ventura County, CA and I used generic landscape weed fabric and the inspector was happy. Granted, he said I could've used red rosin paper but I didn't like the idea of it totally rotting in a few months

Isn't there a spec for it? Hard to believe you just use whatever's around.
I think I'd use a 6 or 8 oz. non-woven filter cloth if it was left up to me to decide.

Re: Best Fabric To Use

Here new septics are engineered and the fabric is specified on the plan. For footing drains I don't know if the code specifies the type of cover fabric but inspectors ask for fabric. When they look down at the drains before backfill I doubt any of them can tell the difference if it's landscape fabric that is made to have 2" of mulch on top or a heavy road stabilization fabric.
Here any of the suppliers of pipe products and all the lumber yards carry a drainage fabric.

Pipeguys recommendation is standard.

Hay is still common practice. We use a filter cloth from our local pipe supplier. For footing drains, we use landscape fabric.

Re: Best Fabric To Use

i talked to a township supervisor today and around here they say red rosen paper, felt paper , straw, anything that will hold the top soil out of the system for awhile then rot away,,,I just thought there was a new way of doing it,,guess the old ways are still the way to go sometimes

Re: Best Fabric To Use

Why do they want it to rot away? I'd think you'd want to always keep it out. Or are the only concerned with keeping it out while backfilling as once it's compacted down it won't fall in real easily?

(I'm not a full time excavator nor do I play one on TV so forgive the random question )

I don't agree with this at all, maybe it somewhat worked years ago, but come on we're not talking in tin cans anymore either!

If a material is underground, then it will take a long time to rot up anyways.

BTW.....who puts topsoil on sandmounds anyways. To keep cost down, 99% of people just grade up the berm material and seed it. I've even see people get away without seeding it.

Re: Best Fabric To Use

I don't want it to rot away. Rosin paper will work, and for the life of me I don't know why.
I have excavated old foundations where rosin paper was used and there is a definite line between the soil and stone.

My problem with rosin paper is that it is so fragile and tears so easily.

I use a non woven fabric. Marafi is 1 manufacturer.
Felt paper is no good, though I have used it in the past. Before I thought about it. Felt is primarily for waterproofing, I want the water to move through the fabric and hold back the soil. The roofers use felt to hold back water, if you put felt over your stone then the moisture has to find its way around your barrier.

Geotextiles are the way to go.

Re: Best Fabric To Use

Jojo,

I looked today ours is a Dupont product, it says SF 20 on it. The use of a good filter fabric should just make you sleep better at night. I've put in many drains with salt hay or tar paper and fabric is easier, faster and more forgiving.
Keep a roll of tar paper or rosin paper in the truck for just in case use. In a week its shredded. Keep hay in the truck? we can ride around with a roll of fabric for six months and its always there ready to go.
The cost, everything taken into account I can't see any one losing a job because they bought fabric and someboby else is using rosin paper. But your product is a much better product for your customer.

Nick

That's what it comes down to. And you can prove the superiority of geofabric right in front of you customer. Take a piece of rosin and wet it, do the same with fabric, see which one stands the test, and which one falls apart in your hand.

Geofabric will allow evaporation, better than rosin paper.
