Is Anyone Frickin Home

Check this out, we've been riding the hell out of my Bobcat here lately and yesterday an Axel seal and bearing went out.

The fellas couldn't pull the hub so I send them to another shop to have some one throw some heat to it, however, as they're walking out the door I tell them both "Use your head and make sure that heavy ars foam filled tire is laying flat and secure on the trailer."

After running a lead I spin by the shop to see how they're making out with the repair and they have the frickin tire upright and pinned in next to the unit with two blocks of 4X4.

Is anybody frickin home anymore?

I can't really fire them because other than this they are of some value to me, however I have to do something because of the potential danger they created.

Lets have your input?

Bob

Walk them over to the trailer where the tire is improperly upright and ask the "What's wrong with this picture." If and when they guess the answer ream them out using foul language and make sure the other people in your crew hear it. When I was a child my parents used to use this tactic of embarrassment over physical punishment, worked quite well. Then over the next couple of days remind them of it in subtle ways. Of course, give them a written warning and tell them it is in their personal file. How hard is it to listen to common sense? How hard is it to follow simple instructions? Apparently, pretty hard.

Make them take the tire down. Then stand there and direct them step-by-step on how you want it done. After they do it once with you have them do it again; 6 or 7 times. When they're done explain to them that accidents cost money that might otherwise get paid to them. Wrap up with a lively question and answer session over some tea and scones.

Glass,
What I have noticed is that the way you react should be consistent with the age of your help. What works on the younger guys, the older ones don't care, and the other way around.

For my guys, I threaten them by saying, "Next time this happens, you can sit home for a day or two." But they are young. If I still had the older guy helping me out, and I would have said that, he would have taken me up on it. But the older one didn't like when he saw a lay-off coming and I could use that as a threat, but the younger guys would start planning a vacation if I used it...that's my experience anyway.

Lately I have been saying, "Hey man, honestly, do you even realize how stupid that was?"

Re: Is Anyone Frickin Home

you guys are all way too mean to your employees. we've come out with a new employee handbook that addresses many of the issues of life. hey, works for us!!! here are a few excerpts.

Love and cherish our Mother the Earth and all the friends of the forest floor.

The out-of-doors is a dangerous place . . . sun, wind and rain can all cause terrible damage to Euphorians.

Always wear SPF 50 or higher sunscreen.

A helmet for every head - that's our motto - life is dangerous!

Competition is not fair!

Multi-cultural awareness - promote gender neutrality.

Tolerance of all behaviors - appropriate and inappropriate - and we embrace mediocrity.

Urban sprawl and SUV's are ruining our Mother the Earth.

Exploring our consciousness - place no boundaries.

Guaranteed equal opportunity.

Outcome-based psychological education - focusing on drug ed, refusal skills and self-esteem instead of academics.

Diversity in community and the workplace.

Government involvement in every aspect of our lives.

We believe in animal rights often over human rights.

Drink only chemical-free bottled water and herbal tea.

The three R's . . . recycle, recycle recycle.

Ginko Biloba chips and other herbal remedies can make it all better.
