6/7 Tonne Excavator Advice

Am looking to purchase a 6 or 7 tonne machine on steel tracks and currently looking at Hitachi EX60 as have been told can't go wrong in terms of reliability, parts prices and resale value. However a couple of dealers near me have Cat 307B at reasonable prices and wondering if these are good machines. I guess they should be being Cats, but are parts expensive etc. looking to sell on in a couple of years once work planned is completed. Any advice welcome!

I have both machines going in a subdivision down in chatham county. I have no complaints with either machine.

Blair,

The standard reply most of us give to questions like this is,

"The dealer that can give you service and parts" Most name brand modern machines are very comparable in specifications and quality. This applies to most machines less than 10 years old. Older machines can vary widely

You don't say what type of work you would be doing with the machine. The differences you will find are in performance. One brand digs faster, one can lift more, one travels real fast, one is smoother operating, one is heavy duty ...........

Tell us more about what you do and where you are and you may get more responses. The peolpe here are notorious for not wanting to make recommendations that effect someone's ability to earn a living without information to go on.

Before buying any piece of equipment get the model and serial number checked to see if it was sold on the North American market. If it was not sold originally in North America you may be stuck getting parts or service.

Hitachi's are great grading/fine work machines and are as reliable as a hammer. The Cat's are digging machines that love to work hard. They both have their good/bad points. Let us know what you want the machines to do and it'll help in choosing the right machine. I just spent the last 10 years working for a Cat dealer and I lost my job due to the wonderful world economy crisis so I have zero alliegance to anyone now. Shoot me an email if you have any questions regarding excavators - they are my specialty

The CAT307B you are looking at are likley to be 2002/3 ex Hewden machines, Hewden have recently sold a load of these machines and nearly every 2nd hand plant dealer has one in and the all have around 2000hrs on, 600mm steel tracks, offset boom, long dipper and hydraulic qiuck hitch a very good good spec thats hard to find as 7tonners either have rubber or 450 steel or short dippers

The reason i know is i've just bought one

Replaced a Komatsu PC75, the CAT is in a different legue and would reccomend to anyone
