wine celler

i have a customer who wants a wine celler installed, for the install i think that a split system is the only way to go. the room is about 1400 square ft, just wondering which manufacture you would recommend.. thanks

A proper cooling system for that big a wine cellar is going to be over 10k

google wine coolers, I looked into them last year for a client and they were pricey, my client had 16x24 and we were looking around 6-7k for a proper system

Yeah, a regular split system won't really work. It needs to not only cool the space, which necessarily removes humidity, but it needs to add or maintain the humidity at a certain percent so the corks don't dry out. My customer ended up going with a mini-split of sorts. It was actually the evaporator and condensing unit that is intended to go in a walk-in flower/florist cooler. It was a few grand cheaper than one's marketed specifically for wine cellars, and achieved the exact same results.

A budget install, which we considered, would have been a normal mini-split system, with something along the lines of the Trion 707 (formerly the Herrmidifier 707) to add moisture back into the air, much like a cigar shop humidifier.

Yep, what he said.. You dont want 68 and dry, you want 55 with reasonable humidity... Wine rooms need refrigeration, not air conditioning. There's a place not far from me on Long Island that specializes in this stuff... I know they can ship anywhere, and they're very good on explaining the details for the installer.

don't forget the walls...

Don't forget, the walls in a wine cellar are expensive to build. (not for you, for the customer) They need to be insulated and vapor retarded. You need to remember that the house will be at 72 and fighting with your 55 in the cellar. google cellar info like Chris said and get the best unit your customer can afford.

Now where to vent the condenser?
