Williams Forsair Model Number: 650dvxr

This is one of those 2 ft by 6 foot wall mounted units that I have on a 3rd floor apt. This unit is from 1988 I believe. I am trying to just replace the thermal coupler, but I can't get access to it. I gently pulled it down from the 1 inch peek hole and figured I can open up the sealed area to replace it.. and I can't seem to get access to it.. Any ideas. I really appreciate any help!! Spoke to 2 hvac guys and they have no experience with these.. its seems Im on my own?
Here is a pic of it!
